ENT SPECIALISTS - MEDICAL ASSISTANT/SCRIBE

Provide service excellence based on patient care and patient relationships. Functions as an effective team member with teamwork being the core approach whether doing order entry or providing patient care.

Responsibilities

• Uses computer applications
• Answers telephones
• Greets patients
• Updates and files patient medical records
• Codes and fills out insurance forms
• Schedules appointments
• Arranges for hospital admissions and laboratory services
• Handles correspondence, billing, and bookkeeping
• Facilitate timely and accurate flow of communication within the clinic/location
• Clarify unsigned orders and chart notes with the provider
• Educate all patients about the significance and importance of registering for the patient portal, including asking the required questions for registration and providing documentation on username, default password, and portal access
• Order and “Associate” all orders and care plans in the chart note to complete an accurate picture of the visit
• Enter patient rooms with provider and document while care is being provided; correct spelling and errors throughout the visit
• Review with provider immediately after the patient has left to verify accuracy and make corrections; require provider sign-off to close the note
• Keep scribe work areas clean and equipment properly maintained
• Protect all patient data by locking computer screen when leaving your station
• Perform all other duties as assigned
• Report to work on time and as scheduled, complete work within designated time
• Wear identification while on duty, use computerized punch time system correctly
• Attend annual review and department staff meetings, as scheduled
• Actively participate in performance improvement and quality improvement activities
• Communicate the mission, ethics, and goals of the hospital, as well as the focus statement of the department
• Complete yearly and monthly MVH online training, participate in bonus structure requirements, and continuing education
• Check emails and be responsible for its content at least three times per week
• Under the responsibility and direct supervision of a licensed person and after documented training and proof of competency, perform the following clinical duties:
  • Take medical histories
  • Administer basic first aid
  • Explain treatment procedures to patients
  • Prepare patients for examination
  • Take vital signs
  • Assist the physician during exams
  • Collect and prepare laboratory specimens
  • Perform basic laboratory tests
  • Instruct patients about medication and special diets
  • Prepare and administer non-invasive medications as directed by a physician and supervised by a licensed person
  • Operate office medical equipment
  • Remove sutures and change dressings
  • Participate in periods of emergency
  • Perform specified and approved aseptic techniques

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED/transcript equivalent
• Basic computer skills necessary
• Proficiency in English, medical terminology, grammar, spelling, and punctuation
• Basic mathematical skills
• Ability to maintain effective and organized systems to ensure timely patient flow
• Effectively communicates with administration, managers, and staff
• Exceptional customer service and telephone etiquette
• Ability to work independently and with groups/teams as both project leader and team member
• Attention to detail and ability to assimilate large amounts of information from various sources
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with a diversity of personalities

Clinical skills may be specific to the clinical setting but may include EKGs, respiratory testing, lab tests classified as “waived” under CLIA, and administering medication only by unit, single dosage, or by a dosage calculated and verified by a healthcare practitioner.
