About the role
The Senior Translator / Language Access Specialist plays a crucial role in facilitating communication between families and school staff. This position requires fluency in both English and Spanish, with a deep understanding of cultural nuances and educational systems.
Responsibilities
- Translate documents, emails, and verbal communications between families and school staff, ensuring accuracy and cultural sensitivity.
- Provide interpretation services during parent-teacher conferences, meetings, and other school events.
- Collaborate with school staff to ensure effective communication and support for families from diverse linguistic backgrounds.
- Develop and maintain relationships with community partners to enhance language access services.
- Conduct training sessions for school staff on best practices in language access and cross-cultural communication.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Education, Translation, Interpretation, or related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in translation, interpretation, or related field, preferably in a K-12 educational setting.
- Proficiency in written and spoken English and Spanish, with a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultures.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build positive relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- Knowledge of special education needs and resources, and familiarity with relevant laws and policies.
Qualifications
- Experience working with families from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
- Cultural competency and sensitivity to the needs of immigrant and refugee communities.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong writing and editing skills, with the ability to produce clear, accurate, and culturally appropriate materials.
