About the Role
Virginia Peninsula Community College (VPCC) is located on the Virginia Peninsula in the heart of Hampton Roads. VPCC is a comprehensive community college, offering programs of study leading to an associate's degree, certificate, or career studies certificate. The College serves over 8,500 students annually in credit instruction and operates two campuses in Hampton and Williamsburg, with a satellite site in Newport News.
Responsibilities
- Provide instruction, support, assessment, and mentorship to students
- Teach minimum of 15 credit hours/24 contact hours of lecture, laboratory, simulation, and/or clinical courses each semester and/or other instructional load as assigned
- Teach at the Hampton or Historic Triangle campuses, off-site locations, on-campus and online classes; day, evening, and/or weekend classes
- Design, develop, and assess curriculum
- Serve as a faculty mentor for students and contribute to College governance and service
- Collaborate in a diverse and collegial organizational culture with high standards for performance
- Remain current in the academic discipline and in trends in teaching through professional development, further education, and/or scholarship
- Post a minimum of 10 hours per week as student contact hours to work with students on individual academic and occupational concerns
- Participate in committee work, student activities, volunteer and/or community activities, student advising, and professional activities including discipline-specific initiatives and program assessment
- Perform other duties as assigned, which may include non-teaching duties
Required Qualifications
- Master's Degree in English or a closely related field with at least 18 graduate credit hours in English from a regionally accredited institution
- Demonstrated commitment to supporting diverse learners
- Knowledge of concept-based curriculum
- Knowledge of adult learning theory and methodologies
- Knowledge of program assessment principles
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Demonstrated teaching and educational facilitation skills
- Ability to work at all campuses
- Ability to assess student performance and progress and to provide appropriate feedback
- Ability to promote higher-order thinking and problem-solving among educational participants
- Ability to adhere to established standards for educational quality
- Ability to maintain complete, accurate educational records and submit final grade rosters according to established deadlines
Additional Considerations
- Experience teaching in a community college setting
- Experience teaching online, hybrid, and/or traditional face-to-face classroom modalities
- Demonstrated proficiency in using instructional technologies and learning management systems (e.g., Canvas)
- Demonstrated ability to measure, assess, and align student outcomes within courses or programs
Pay
$58,335 - $82,647
Schedule
Teaching load as assigned—may include daytime, weekend, and evening hours. Full-time, 9-month faculty position.
