English as Second Language (ESL) Instructor

About the Role

Under administrative direction of an educational administrator, provide lecture and laboratory instruction, develop curriculum, evaluate student performance in English as a Second Language (ESL), and perform related work. This tenure-track instructional role begins January 2027 and is centered on supporting multilingual learners through equity-minded, culturally responsive teaching practices.

Responsibilities

• Teach ESL courses from novice through advanced levels, integrating reading, writing, grammar, listening, speaking, and pronunciation.
• Use equity-minded, culturally responsive instructional practices that promote active learning, critical thinking, and student success.
• Collaborate with faculty to develop and share instructional resources and support departmental initiatives.
• Partner with counselors, administrators, and program coordinators to enhance student retention and achievement.
• Participate in curriculum development, student learning outcomes assessment, and equity-focused review of course success data.
• Engage in campus governance, departmental activities, program review, and ongoing professional development.

Requirements

• Valid Master’s Degree in TESL, TESOL, Applied Linguistics with a TESL emphasis, Linguistics with a TESL emphasis, English with a TESL emphasis, or Education with a TESL emphasis.
• OR a Bachelor’s Degree in TESL, TESOL, English with a TESL certificate, Linguistics with a TESL certificate, Applied Linguistics with a TESL certificate, or any foreign language with a TESL certificate AND a Master’s Degree in Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, English, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, Reading, Speech, or any foreign language.
• Valid California Class C or higher driver’s license (required prior to appointment).
• Foreign transcripts must be evaluated by an approved agency if used to meet minimum qualifications.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge Of:

• ESL educational practices and current trends.
• Teaching/learning principles, techniques, and test construction.
• Collaborative problem resolution and office procedures.
• Computer operation, including word processing and software applications.

Ability To:

• Teach ESL classes across proficiency levels using inclusive, culturally responsive methods.
• Communicate effectively in writing and speech, including public presentations and interpersonal interactions.
• Collaborate with faculty, staff, and external partners to support student success.
• Analyze data, solve problems, and implement action plans.
• Work independently and in teams, manage workloads, and meet deadlines.
• Operate computers and software for instruction, record-keeping, and communication.
• Interact effectively with diverse populations, including individuals with disabilities and historically underrepresented groups.
• Drive an automobile for official travel.

Physical Requirements

• Frequently utilize vision (near and far) for reading, writing, and observing classroom activities.
• Frequently utilize hearing and speech for conversation, instruction, and telephone communication.
• Frequently sit, stand, walk, bend, and reach to instruct and assist students.
• Lift, carry, push, pull, and reach objects up to 50 lbs., including overhead storage.
• Work in environments with varying heights, including step ladders/stools.
