Engineering Technician II - Airport

Distinguishing Features of Work: Paraprofessional engineering role providing support in all phases of complex construction and maintenance projects, including drafting, research, technical analysis, inspection, and data management. Work is performed under general supervision in both office and field environments.

Examples of Work Performed

• Performs computer-aided drafting using AutoCAD Civil 3D software to prepare simple construction plans, exhibits, and details for airport construction projects.
• Creates drafting for other airport divisions, including property lease exhibits, specialized airport layout drawings, and exhibits for security and operational plans.
• Performs computations and calculations for plans preparation and cost estimation.
• Reviews paving and structural mix designs.
• Inspects construction work for compliance with contract documents.
• Observes testing of concrete, asphaltic concrete, aggregates, and field moisture/density testing of soils during earthwork.
• Inspects, evaluates, and documents pavement conditions.
• Receives, files, and inserts CAD-based electronic information into current airport drawings and project files (preliminary and as-built).
• Creates and maintains databases, exhibits, maps, and GIS layers electronically.
• Performs basic survey and data collection using GPS equipment.
• Performs site utility locates and operates utility locate equipment.

Requirements

• Knowledge of surveying or drafting instruments and methods.
• General knowledge of building, paving, and utility construction.
• Working knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices.
• Ability to use a computer to access, interpret, and record information.
• Skill in engineering computations, estimates, designs, and preparation of plans and specifications.
• Skill in writing reports, quantity take-offs, and cost estimates.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
• Knowledge and ability to use standard AutoCAD and related software.
• Ability to recognize and respond to CAD system signals for proper operation.
• Ability to quickly learn material testing techniques for concrete, asphaltic concrete, aggregates, and earthwork compaction/moisture content.
• Ability to look through instruments at a height of approximately five feet and reach to extend level rod and prism pole.
• Ability to work safely in heavy traffic and traverse uneven terrain, climb steps or ladders, and tolerate airborne environmental nuisances at construction sites.
• Ability to walk distances of approximately one mile in intervals, carrying 10-25 pounds of survey instruments and tools (e.g., total station, tripod, prism pole, level rod, data collector, locators, stakes, shovel, sledge hammer).
• Ability to walk, bend, kneel, drive stakes, and hammer tacks with a sledge hammer.
• Ability to operate electronic total station, calculator, data collector, pipe and cable locators, and level.
• Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions.
• Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, other departments, organizations, and the public.
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Requires a valid Kansas driver’s license.
• Must pass federal security background investigations (DHS/TSA) to acquire and maintain airport identification and access control media.
• Must pass and obtain certification for unescorted access onto runways and taxiways (Air Operations Area (AOA) training).
• Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of others in the workplace.
