Engineering Technician II (2nd/3rd Shift)

Department Overview

The Environmental Test Laboratory simulates real-world environments for component handling and transport, storage, flight, and delivery to ensure reliability. Laboratory testing on manufactured products and products in development includes a variety of environments and situations to verify quality and proper functionality. Materials are tested to determine long-term effects of temperature and humidity and to validate product design by simulating dynamic, climatic, and/or electrical end-use conditions. Product limits and tolerances are established through over-test simulation scenarios to develop safety margins for manufactured components.

Responsibilities

• Set up testing and mechanical support equipment, monitoring and measuring instruments, and other apparatus to perform a wide variety of tests on materials, breadboard circuitry, prototype units, and production units.
• Program equipment for different outdoor environment simulations and provide mechanical support, testing, operation, and field deployment of special equipment, including travel to remote sites as required.
• Build prototypes for testing and experimentation, and create samples for further analysis.
• Conduct tests and experiments with new materials, equipment, and processes to develop data for specification call-out or to determine material suitability for specific applications.
• Evaluate test results for validity, accuracy, and completeness, including performing chemical processing and mechanical evaluations as applicable.
• Locate and correct malfunctions in products and testing equipment, and perform post-mortem analyses to determine exact reasons for failure.
• Draft calibrating and operating procedures based on comprehensive knowledge of products and testing equipment, and create sketches or mark up drawings to reflect changes.
• Maintain and calibrate primary and secondary metrology standards, test laboratory equipment, control consoles, and associated monitoring, measuring, and recording instruments.
• Record laboratory notes and other details as specified by engineering personnel.
• Collaborate with management and engineering to establish test techniques for new products during development and resolve product or equipment problems.
• Improve and refine existing fixtures, devices, methods, process steps, or procedures, implementing changes as necessary.
• Use all necessary equipment, techniques, and tools to complete tasks.
• Conduct activities in a safe and healthy manner, adhering to established HS&E requirements to protect employees, the public, and the environment. Stop work when unsafe conditions or actions are identified.

Requirements

• High School diploma.
• 2 or more years of experience in a technical field.
• Ability to travel up to 5% of the time.
• United States Citizenship.
• Ability to work on-site as directed by management and as determined by business needs.
• Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of this job.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance (some positions require additional DOE designations).

Preferred Qualifications

• 2-year technical degree.
• Some positions within this classification may require electrical, mechanical, chemical processing, and/or electronic skills and abilities.
