About the role
The Columbia, SC office of Schnabel Engineering is seeking an Engineering Technician to join our growing practice. We are looking for motivated candidates with attention to detail, a passion for professional development, and a desire to be part of a strong team. This role involves field observation, testing, and reporting on construction materials and environmental samples.
Responsibilities
- Field observation and testing during placement of construction materials including soil, concrete, asphalt, masonry, and reinforcing steel
- Collect data, maintain, and troubleshoot geotechnical instrumentation
- Collect environmental water and soil samples from monitoring wells, borings, excavations, drains, and surface water bodies
- Perform laboratory soils and concrete testing
- Prepare reports documenting observations and test results
- Communicate with contractors and engineers to discuss observations and test results
Requirements
- Prior experience on construction projects (minimum 2 years preferred)
- Technician certification (ACI, SCDOT, or AASHTO)
- 40 Hour HAZWOPER Certification or ability to obtain within 6 months
- MSHA 24 Training or ability to obtain within 6 months
- High School degree
- Valid U.S. Driver’s License
- Ability to lift 50–75 pounds occasionally and navigate construction sites, climb ladders, and work outside
- Basic knowledge of soil and concrete laboratory testing
- Ability to work independently or as part of a multidisciplinary, multi-office team
- Strong attention to detail, organization, and professional work ethic
- Basic understanding and ability to use hand tools
- Ability to pass a background check (including criminal history, motor vehicle record, and credit check)
- Ability to pass a pre-employment screening

Pay
The compensation range for this position is $16/hr to $22/hr, varying based on geographic location and other factors.
