Engineering Technician
About the role
A dynamic venture-backed medical device startup is seeking a skilled Electronics Technician to join its innovative team in developing a next-generation implantable neuromodulation system. The successful candidate will work closely with a senior engineering team to handle rework, testing, and troubleshooting of highly miniaturized PCBAs.
This Contract to Hire position is based in Irvine, CA.
Responsibilities
- Perform precision hand soldering and rework on miniature PCBAs under a microscope, including ultra-small passive components and fine-pitch ICs.
- Remove and replace components, repair solder joints, and modify prototype boards as directed by engineering.
- Support prototype and engineering builds of electronic and electromechanical assemblies, working with boards assembled by a contract manufacturer.
- Follow proper ESD handling and control procedures.
- Run board bring-up procedures with engineers, power up new boards, check functionality, and record measurements.
- Load firmware and program boards using standard programming hardware and PC software tools.
- Perform functional and parametric testing, supporting design verification testing as the program progresses.
- Diagnose failures to the board and component level using oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, power supplies, schematics, and datasheets.
- Communicate findings and propose next steps to engineers without waiting for step‑by‑step directions.
- Maintain accurate rework, test, and failure records, sharing results with the engineering team.
Essential Skills
- Expert precision hand soldering and rework under a microscope on miniature components.
- Component‑level troubleshooting with an oscilloscope, DMM, and bench equipment, as well as reading schematics and datasheets.
- 3+ years of hands‑on experience in electronics rework, testing, or troubleshooting.
- Strong communication skills and a positive attitude working in a fast‑paced startup environment.
- Comfort with computers and proficiency in using software tools, particularly Microsoft applications.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in medical device environments, especially implantable or regulated environments (ISO).
- IPC J‑STD‑001 or IPC‑A‑610 certification.
- Familiarity with Altium design files.
- Experience supporting prototype/NPI builds and design verification testing.
Work Environment
The position is based in a Medical Device R&D site, providing an opportunity to work directly with the senior Director of Engineering, the VP of Systems & Software, and electrical design engineers. This ground‑floor role offers the chance to learn the design from the first prototype and carry that knowledge into design verification. Ideal for candidates looking to grow towards engineering roles in a cutting‑edge startup environment.
