Engineering Supervisor

About the role

Provides round-the-clock oversight, operations and maintenance (O&M) management, leadership, technical direction, and performance management for a major utility system or plant operation within Engineering (e.g., steam generation, chilled water, HVAC, plumbing, medical gas). Ensures systems operate at optimal levels of productivity and competence. Serves as the subject matter expert (SME) for individual plant systems and may frequently require work outside normal business hours. Responsibilities include managing timesheets, personnel evaluations, goal setting, and progress evaluation using a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS). Oversees daily activities and task performance of engineering staff and develops, cultivates, and maintains relationships with staff, facility managers, clinical staff, patients, and patients' families.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, assign, and coordinate work performed by direct reports; evaluate work for acceptability and compliance with applicable regulatory, safety, quality, and productivity standards.
  • Assist manager in developing goals aligned with the needs and goals of the facility.
  • Demonstrate a strong working knowledge of at least one functional area of Engineering (e.g., Electrical, Plant, Maintenance, Painting, General Construction).
  • Assist manager in recruiting, interviewing, and selecting staff; recommend staffing and personnel changes as needed.
  • Manage timekeeping (schedules and Kronos) and approve time-off requests.
  • Collaborate daily with other leaders to address operational issues within the buildings.
  • Attend all manager training courses.
  • Meet with each team member quarterly and write/submit PEACs (Performance Evaluations and Career Development) with input from the Facility Manager.
  • Provide knowledge and input on all HR requirements and set area/team goals.
  • Ensure staff work toward department goals and remove barriers as needed.
  • Write, review, and implement policies and procedures.
  • Train team on existing systems to ensure competency and develop competency tests to verify training.
  • Resolve personnel issues with input from HR and management as appropriate.
  • Interface with Facility Managers to ensure projects, corrective work orders, and preventative maintenance work orders are completed in a timely fashion.
  • Ensure appropriate staffing matrix to provide high-quality results and meet productivity standards.
  • Work with Facility Manager to decide if projects should be contracted out when staff resources are limited.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of hospital maintenance experience or similar facility experience (Required).
  • At least 2 years of supervising staff and projects (Required).
  • High school diploma or equivalent (Required).
  • Two-year Associate's degree or equivalent experience (Preferred).

Qualifications

  • Certified Healthcare Facility Manager (CHFM) (Preferred).
