Opportunity Overview

We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Manager, Optical Instrumentation Design Engineering to lead the development of next-generation optical instrumentation technologies within Teradyne’s Innovation Lab. This role is responsible for managing a team of optical engineers while owning the strategy, architecture, and execution of native optical instrumentation development from concept through product deployment. The successful candidate will combine deep technical expertise in optical instrumentation with proven leadership capabilities to drive innovative, high-performance solutions for semiconductor test and emerging technology applications.

All About You

  • Lead and develop a team of optical engineers responsible for the design, development, and validation of native optical instrumentation platforms and technologies.
  • Drive the technical vision, architecture, and roadmap for optical instrumentation systems aligned with business objectives.
  • Partner with project managers and cross-functional teams to deliver programs on schedule, within budget, and to performance targets.
  • Guide the team in solving complex optical design challenges and developing innovative instrumentation solutions.
  • Establish design verification, validation, and quality processes that ensure reliable and manufacturable products.
  • Collaborate with customers and internal stakeholders to define requirements and influence product direction.
  • Manage engineering resources, priorities, and project execution to maximize team effectiveness and business impact.
  • Mentor and develop engineers through coaching, performance management, and technical leadership.
  • Drive research and technology exploration efforts to identify and adopt emerging optical technologies.
  • Provide regular updates to senior leadership on program status, risks, and strategic opportunities.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, quality requirements, and engineering processes.
  • Build and maintain supplier relationships supporting critical optical components and subsystems.

Minimum Criteria

  • Bachelor’s degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, or related discipline; Master’s degree preferred.
  • 7+ years of experience developing fiber-optic and optical instrumentation systems, including at least 3 years in an engineering management or technical leadership role.
  • Experience leading teams developing optical instrumentation products from concept through production.
  • Strong project leadership experience within complex, cross-functional development environments.
  • Deep understanding of optical system architecture, instrumentation design, testing, and validation.
  • Proven ability to lead engineers, influence technical direction, and build high-performing teams.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a track record of delivering innovative technical solutions.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, including customer-facing experience.
  • Experience managing multiple priorities and programs simultaneously.
  • Proficiency with optical design and simulation tools such as Lumerical, Zemax, Code V, or equivalent.
  • PREFERRED: Experience developing optical instrumentation for semiconductor test, photonics, sensing, or metrology applications.
  • PREFERRED: Experience defining technical roadmaps and long-term instrumentation platform strategies.
  • PREFERRED: Experience transitioning advanced optical technologies from R&D into commercial products.

Compensation

The base salary range for this role is $151,800 - $242,800. This range is a good faith estimate, and the amount of base salary will correspond with experience and skill set. This range can also fluctuate depending on demand and location. Incentive Plan: This job is eligible for discretionary bonus(es) based on financial performance.
