About the Opportunity

The Engineering Manager, Search Platform leads the team responsible for the search and discovery experience within the platform. This role oversees the search engine, indexing pipeline, and availability services, directly influencing how customers find restaurants and impacting order volume and platform competitiveness. The position involves guiding architecture, delivery, and operational maturity while managing and developing engineering staff.

Responsibilities

• Lead delivery and technical quality for query serving, indexing, availability, and dependent APIs.
• Define technical direction for the search stack, including architecture, schema, indexing, query patterns, ranking, and migration.
• Ensure freshness and accuracy of the index and availability services.
• Review designs, challenge assumptions, and mitigate technical risks.
• Foster a culture of measurement, experimentation, and continuous improvement.
• Coach and develop engineers, setting clear expectations and maintaining high technical standards.
• Prioritize and sequence work to reduce risks and support downstream teams.
• Collaborate with product, data, AI/ML, and platform teams on relevance and infrastructure.
• Establish strong engineering practices and clear ownership within the team.

Requirements

• Over 8 years of software engineering experience including leadership roles in backend or platform systems.
• Proven engineering management experience with hiring and retaining strong engineers.
• Deep expertise in search or retrieval systems such as Vespa, Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, or Solr.
• Strong background in distributed, event-driven backend systems; Go language experience preferred.
• Knowledge of indexing pipelines, document models, and event-streaming for data freshness.
• Strong understanding of relevance and ranking and translating product goals into technical solutions.
• Experience with observability, production operations, and safe rollouts for critical systems.
• Ability to balance technical depth, leadership, and cross-functional collaboration.

Pay

The national total target cash compensation range for this position, including base salary and bonus target, is $195,000 to $255,000 annually. Final offer amounts depend on prior experience, expertise, and region. This range excludes other compensation benefits such as equity, 401(k), medical, dental, or vision insurance.
