Engineering Manager - Power Transformers

Responsibilities & Expectations

  • Lead, develop, and support a team of four engineers.
  • Build training plans and support technical competency development across the team.
  • Manage employee responsibilities including interviewing, hiring, training, assigning work, evaluating performance, recognizing achievement, addressing discipline, resolving complaints, and solving problems.
  • Develop processes that support business needs across the organization.
  • Manage complex issues within the engineering function and area of expertise.
  • Contribute to long-term planning and the overall IPS Transformer business strategy.
  • Develop and execute a 3-year engineering roadmap focused on standardization, process improvement, talent development, and scalable growth.
  • Jointly accountable for year over year revenue and profitability growth with Commercial Manager and Area General Manager.
  • Lead the engineering team in providing engineering and project management support for Denver’s Transformer Repair/Remanufacture and Field Service business.
  • Oversee key projects, processes, and performance reports to ensure consistent execution and accountability.
  • Ensure the team delivers cohesive, complete project outcomes that meet business and customer expectations.
  • Review and approve technical content for proposals and change orders, while providing input on commercial items such as milestone invoicing and project strategy.
  • Support the design of transformer rewinds, uprates, and upgrades across various designs, types, and OEMs during both quotation and execution phases.
  • Conduct design reviews as needed to identify and mitigate project risk.
  • Provide escalation support for complex transformer diagnostics, RCFA, design review, testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Develop and implement policies, procedures, standards, and programs for the IPS Transformer Services business.
  • Drive material cost reduction, supplier excellence, CIPS continuous improvement objectives, and related on-site and service center support.
  • Affirm products meet customer, third-party, and internal specifications, expectations, and standards.
  • Assure product quality by developing electrical testing methods in partnership with Quality Control and the Test Engineer, and by validating finished products and system capabilities.
  • Act as a senior technical advisor to key customers and support resolution of escalated customer issues while protecting project margins and customer relationships.
  • Partner with operations, quality, purchasing, and sales to ensure company objectives are met improving safety, quality, productivity, and repair execution.
  • Engage with clients to support major proposals, RFP/RFQ responses, customer site visits, lunch-and-learns, and technical presentations.
  • Help translate technical findings into clear customer-facing recommendations and ensure IPS solutions are properly aligned.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge through educational workshops, professional publications, networks, and industry participation.

Qualifications and Competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field, plus at least eight years of electrical engineering experience in transformer design and testing.
  • Master’s degree and/or Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt certification desired.
  • Demonstrated experience in medium or large power transformers.
  • Experience in special transformers (EAF, regulating, rectifying, mobile, phase shifting, or grounding) preferred.
  • Ability to create, read, or modify outline and nameplate drawings, winding schematics, control wiring diagrams, and transformer test plans.
  • Strong knowledge of transformer construction, including coils, core, tank, protection and controls, insulation, conductors, and fluids.
  • Considerable experience with the design, manufacture, and service of transformers across various types, designs, ages, and OEMs.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, and transformer design software.
  • Leading an engineering team and managing projects exceeding $1M.
  • Directing craft labor in a shop environment or at customer sites desired.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and persuasively, listen effectively, respond to questions, and participate productively in meetings.
  • Strong commercial awareness, customer communication skills, and ability to influence across operations, sales, and engineering.
  • Ability to write clear reports and correspondence, present numerical data effectively, and communicate information in one-on-one and small-group settings with customers, clients, and employees.
