Engineering Manager, Electrical
About the role
National Grid's Connect 21 strategy focuses on designing, building, and operating efficient energy systems for the 21st century digital economy. NGG, a part of National Grid Generation, owns and operates 3,860 MW of steam and combustion turbine units on Long Island. The department specializes in developing engineered solutions for these units, collaborating with power plant and support services personnel throughout the engineering and construction phases of projects. PED engineers are self-directed, empowered, and take ownership of projects from inception to operation, focusing on innovation, collaboration, and delivering successful projects.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the project electrical portfolio manager throughout the lifecycle of multiple projects, including engineering, design, construction, and operation, for both existing generating assets and new energy development opportunities.
- Coach and mentor direct reports and project team members, providing technical direction, performance feedback, and development support to strengthen departmental capability.
- Conduct comprehensive asset evaluations to determine maintenance and investment requirements.
- Review safety, environmental, and financial risk analyses to ensure project viability.
- Approve cost estimates, conduct benefit analyses, and assess risks for projects.
- Review engineering calculations and studies to support project scope and requirements.
- Review specifications, standards, and procedures to ensure project compliance and quality.
- Provide technical evaluations for new energy development projects, including areas such as energy storage, solar, relay protection, and combustion turbines.
- Research and evaluate emerging technologies to identify their potential application in new projects and existing assets, aiming to provide enhanced value to customers and load serving entities.
- Serve as the subject matter expert for NPCC and NERC reliability standards, providing guidance on compliance requirements and technical interpretation.
- Support, maintain, and continuously improve the electrical equipment maintenance program to enhance reliability, availability, and regulatory compliance.
- Provide field engineering and troubleshooting support to help return generation assets to service safely and in a timely manner.
- Interface effectively with internal and external stakeholders to coordinate priorities, resolve technical issues, and support successful project execution.
- Provide technical expertise to support safety initiatives, Good Catches, lessons learned, and development of internal standards and procedures.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
- NYS Professional Engineer (PE) license a must.
- Valid NYS Driver's License.
- Minimum 15 years of related experience with proven leadership skills in effectively leading and managing internal/external project teams.
- Experience with AutoCAD and electrical system modeling applications (e.g., SKM, ETAP).
- In-depth understanding of industry standards and regulations, including OHSA, NFPA, NEMA, UL, IEEE, NERC, and NPCC.
- Demonstrated ability to perform technical analysis, troubleshoot electrical issues, and propose effective solutions.
- Demonstrated experience with relay protection and control systems, including protection schemes, relay settings, coordination studies, control logic, event analysis, and commissioning support.
- Strong knowledge of power generation systems, including generators, transformers, switchgear, and protection systems.
- Familiarity with energy storage systems, solar and wind power generation.
- Proficiency in MS Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Skilled in project cost/benefit and risk analysis.
- Capable of working in a power plant environment, recognizing hazards, and implementing safeguards.
