About the role
The Engineering Manager is responsible for all engineering and design activities on the engagement and assists the Project Manager. The role reports to the Project Manager and provides direction to Area Engineers, Discipline Leads, and Discipline Engineers on engineering-related matters.
Responsibilities
- Define scope, engineering planning, and sequencing of engineering activities.
- Plan, onboard, and demobilize engineering resources.
- Provide technical leadership, integrate disciplines, and resolve technical issues.
- Ensure engineering quality and Safety in Design.
- Deliver all engineering deliverables in accordance with processes and procedures within the specified timeframe and budget.
- Ensure all planning baseline information is documented in the client agreement, including:
- Scope of engineering services and facilities.
- Roles Assignment (RACI) matrix for engineering scope.
- Engagement work package (EWP) register with budget, schedule, and scope.
- Deliverables list aligned with EWPs.
- Engineering schedule and resource plan at EWP level, aligned with the project master schedule.
- Global Delivery Work Plan (e.g., discipline distribution, integrated teams, or vertical packages).
- Engineering training plan with budget.
- Client requirements (e.g., asset tagging, design specifications, approval processes, CAD, and coordinate systems).
- Multi-disciplinary engineering workflows and methodologies.
- Vendor package register requiring engineering input (e.g., scope of works, technical adjudication, quality assessment).
- Integrated engineering systems plan (feeding into the engagement Digital Delivery Plan).
- Engagement procedures manual.
- Ensure setup processes are completed, including:
- Work Break Structure (WBS) with EWPs.
- Mobilization and onboarding of engineering resources.
- Design tools (including 3D clash detection) in coordination with the IM/PAT team.
- Baselining of the engineering schedule.
- Release of engineering EWPs and timesheet charge codes.
- Establishment and updating of design criteria, standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Communication of resource requirements and schedules to regional engineering leads.
- EWP breakdown including budgets, schedules, and deliverables.
- Dissemination of engagement workplan, procedures manual, and quality requirements to the engineering team.
- During execution:
- Contribute to the Project Execution Plan (PEP) with the project leadership team.
- Coordinate the engineering budget for the next phase.
- Provide input into the engagement monthly report (e.g., design progress, cost against budget, earned progress, issues, and recommendations).
- Coordinate with Procurement, Construction, Environmental, Safety, and Commissioning personnel early in the design effort.
- Maintain contact with client management to ensure deliverables meet requirements.
- Review and appraise the engineering team structure to meet short- and long-term objectives.
- Ensure effective use of engineering systems and 3D intelligent design environment, complying with Hatch’s digital standards.
- Direct and review engineering activities to ensure work quality and personnel development.
- Involve specialist technical expertise as necessary.
- Raise safety awareness and apply design for safety principles.
- For Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs):
- Assign a P&ID coordinator.
- Ensure P&ID checklist sign-off by relevant parties.
- Align intelligent P&ID systems with asset registers (e.g., equipment list, line list, valve list, instrument list).
- Ensure HAZOP review is conducted and mitigation items are addressed.
- Ensure technical risk and safety assessments are conducted.
- Arrange and facilitate design reviews.
- Ensure clash detection is applied and exceptions are closed out.
- Store technical design calculations in the engagement’s Electronic Document Management System (EDMS).
- Coordinate quality audit verifications for compliance with engineering standards and procedures.
- Cooperate with the Global Engineering Practice on expertise and knowledge sharing.
- Lead change management and engagement technical review processes.
- Communicate baseline changes to identified stakeholders.
- Contribute to Value Improvement Practices activities.
- Develop Progressive Learnings for engineering scope.
Requirements
- BSc/BEng degree in an engineering discipline.
- Registration as a Professional Engineer with the governing authority (where applicable).
- Typically, 12 years’ experience in a multi-disciplinary environment.
- Typically, 3 years’ experience in managing design engineering teams.
- Extensive technical knowledge of engineering systems, design, processes, materials, and technologies.
- General knowledge of industry, regulatory standards, codes, and design criteria.
- Advanced ability to plan, coordinate, and organize.
- Comprehensive knowledge of project planning, controls, and multi-discipline interdependencies.
- Knowledge of 3D model/drawing production and document control methodologies.
- Knowledge of earned value management, progress assessment, and engineering control strategies.
- Ability to adapt to constant change and high-pressure situations.
- Strong communication skills across all levels, including client representatives.
- Ability to manage relationships with key stakeholders (internal and external).
- Understanding of procurement, contracting, construction, and commissioning methodologies.
- Ability to lead, motivate, and inspire others, and provide coaching on best practices.
- Ability to handle complex problem-solving tasks with high-level technical detail.
