About the role
The Lab Tech I builds engineering prototypes, maintains psychrometric test cells and lab conditioning equipment, and performs unit modifications in and out of the psychrometric test cells to aid in short- and long-term research and development of eco-friendly heating and cooling solutions. The role also involves operating psychrometric test cells and airflow measuring stations according to established standards and procedures to support sustaining and new product development projects. Supervision is required.
Responsibilities
- Follow verbal and written instructions from Project Engineers, Designers, Senior Technicians, and Engineering Services Managers
- Follow processes and procedures for setup and installation of equipment in test cells
- Follow processes and procedures for setup as they relate to regulatory agencies
- Read and interpret sheet metal drawings, wiring diagrams, and develop wire charts
- Perform silver brazing of copper and dissimilar metals such as brass and steel
- Perform soft soldering of copper and copper to brass
- Identify fit, form, and function of major components of heat pump and fan coil systems
- Assemble units and make unit modifications with minimal supervision
- Maintain clean work environment in accordance with 5S principles
- Work with competing demands and flexible hours, including Saturdays and overtime as needed
- Report unsafe conditions or actions and promote safe working conditions
- Follow safety guidelines and policies to ensure safe working practices
- Use AS400 Product Inquiry and Product Structure Inquiry screens
- Operate a forklift (licensed)
- Perform LOTO and Electrical Safety tasks (trained and certified)
Requirements
- Associate degree or certification in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology or equivalent experience preferred
- Entry-level HVAC technical aptitude and experience
- Knowledge of database software; AS400, Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel)
- Knowledge of LabVIEW software and National Instruments hardware is a plus
- LOTO Electrical Safety Certification
- CCG Powered Industrial Truck Certification
- Refrigerant Handlers license
- Industry-applicable licenses are a plus
Skills
- Knowledge of basic refrigeration concepts and tools
- Understanding of the basic refrigeration cycle
- Ability to identify basic components of the refrigeration cycle and how they interact
- Understanding of the pressure–temperature relationship and its application to sub-cooling and superheat calculations
- Knowledge of basic electrical concepts
- Ability to apply basic Ohm’s Law principles to inductive, capacitive, and resistive circuits
- Basic understanding of metrology applications and use
- Proficiency with basic hand tools, sheet metal tools, air and motorized tools (e.g., screw guns, drills), grinders, circular saws, and band saws
