Engineering Intern (2 Opportunities)

About the role

Waukesha County’s Department of Public Works – Engineering Division is seeking two hard‑working engineering students to assist the engineering staff in the design, construction, and operation of Waukesha County’s highway system during the summer months. The internship provides broad exposure to many aspects of civil engineering, hands‑on experience applying technical knowledge in a public‑sector environment, and opportunities to build responsibility, confidence, and leadership through teamwork and mentoring of peers.

Responsibilities

• Roadway design and CAD drafting/Civil 3D
• Roadway plan production
• Construction estimating
• Design field surveying and staking
• Topographic and boundary surveys
• Appraisal and construction staking
• Traffic analysis and reports
• Traffic data collection
• Construction inspection and record keeping
• Bridge construction inspection and record keeping
• Asphalt paving program construction administration and inspection
• Bridge and culvert inspections and inventory
• Highway and park system asset management inventory
• Public and county customer interaction
• Other tasks as assigned by the engineering staff

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in a four‑year engineering bachelor’s degree program or a two‑year engineering technician associate degree program
• Proven oral and written communication skills
• Accuracy and attention to detail
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Ability to expand and improve problem‑solving skills
• Competent in the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)
• Reliable and dependable
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, contractors, and other staff

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with or knowledge of design and visualization software such as AutoCAD/Civil 3D and GIS
• Experience with robotic surveying equipment
• Possession of a valid driver’s license

Pay

$12.71 – $22.52 per hour

Schedule

Summer internship; specific schedule to be arranged with the Engineering Division.
