About the role
MWH is currently seeking a highly experienced and technically skilled Engineering Design Manager to lead, manage, and coordinate the design efforts of complex water infrastructure projects. The ideal candidate has extensive experience with municipal and/or industrial water/wastewater treatment facilities, and a proven track record of managing multidisciplinary engineering teams, overseeing quality, guiding permitting and regulatory compliance, and serving as a technical leader throughout design and preconstruction.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage engineering design efforts for complex, multi-discipline projects, ensuring alignment with budget, schedule, quality, and contractual commitments.
- Direct all phases of design (conceptual, preliminary, final), driving coordination across various disciplines.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for all design-related issues, both internally and externally, with final technical accountability for overall project design and delivery.
- Supervise and mentor multidisciplinary teams, including project managers and senior engineers, while managing multiple concurrent projects as needed.
- Plan, schedule, and monitor the design process; lead internal and external design coordination meetings, P&ID reviews, and 3D model reviews.
- Ensure design compliance with the projects basis of design and company quality standards through regular interdisciplinary reviews and design verification activities.
- Support project managers in proposal development, resource planning, scheduling, benchmarking, cost estimating, and design change management.
- Oversee implementation and updates, ensuring adherence to company procedures and change management protocols.
- Evaluate staffing needs, assign resources effectively, and maintain accurate forecasting.
- Coordinate with subconsultants and external stakeholders; negotiate critical design issues and contract terms with clients and partner organizations.
- Engage in professional development activities such as publishing technical papers, serving on committees, and participating in industry organizations.
- Identify and support recruitment of new staff, participating in interviews and candidate selection.
- Provide construction-phase support, including site visits and constructability input during design.
- Foster strong client relationships, support business development efforts, and contribute to securing repeat and new project opportunities.
- Ensure availability of VDC tools, oversee record documentation, and support delivery of closeout materials (O&M manuals, as-builts, etc.).
- Travel as required for client meetings, site visits, and coordination efforts.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Architecture, or related field; or equivalent experience and training/education.
- Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE).
- 10+ years of progressive design experience, including 5 years in design leadership or management role on large, multidisciplinary water infrastructure projects.
- 5+ years of experience on water or wastewater treatment plant projects.
- Proficiency in design software and tools (AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks, and BIM/VDC platforms).
- Knowledge of relevant codes, permitting, and jurisdictional requirements.
- Track record of successful client relationship management and business development.
- Demonstrated leadership of multidisciplinary teams.
- Exceptional communication, negotiation, and presentation skills.
- Willingness to travel as required for project or client needs.

The anticipated salary for this position is budgeted at $130,000 - $160,000 per year.
