Engineering Assistant 1/2/3 (PCN 253699)

About the Role

This is a flexibly staffed Engineering Assistant 1/2/3 position located in Juneau, Alaska. The position may be filled at any of the three levels, depending on the applicant's training and experience. Starting salary will be determined by the level at which the position is hired, with promotion to higher levels possible over time.

Pay

• Engineering Assistant 1: $35.45 per hour (overtime eligible)
• Engineering Assistant 2: $40.86 per hour (overtime eligible)
• Engineering Assistant 3: $46.71 per hour (overtime eligible)

Responsibilities

• Engineering Assistant 1:
  • Performs entry/trainee-level professional engineering duties under immediate supervision.
  • Works toward becoming a Project Engineer, responsible for onsite administration of construction projects.
  • Within the first 12 months, works on at least one active construction project and demonstrates competence in primary work activities outlined in the training plan.
  • Develops knowledge, skills, and abilities required for advancement to Engineering Assistant 2.
• Engineering Assistant 2:
  • Performs basic engineering duties under general supervision, applying standard engineering practices.
  • Serves as Project Engineer for low- to medium-complexity construction projects.
  • Acts as Assistant Project Engineer on more complex construction projects.
• Engineering Assistant 3:
  • Serves as the Department’s designated Project Engineer for construction contract administration.
  • Responsible for inspection, acceptance, and payment of work on one or more construction projects of average to above-average complexity.
  • Acts in a lead capacity for subordinate Engineering Assistants and Engineering Technicians.

Work Environment

This Juneau-based position operates within a small, collaborative team with a broad range of experience in highways, airports, bridges, construction, and public engagement. The role involves:

• Working in Alaska’s diverse and expansive terrain, including remote locations and urban centers.
• Addressing transportation needs in extreme weather conditions and rugged terrain.
• Occasional travel to project sites within Alaska’s coastal region (Spring/Summer/Fall), including flights to remote communities in small aircraft, with infrequent overnight stays in minimal accommodations.
• Conducting site inspections in adverse weather conditions.

Qualifications

• Engineering Assistant 1:
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, or land surveying from an ABET-accredited institution, or
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, or land surveying from a non-ABET-accredited institution and one of the following:
    • Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate, or
    • Verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.
  • Applicants within nine months of obtaining an ABET-accredited degree may apply and may receive a conditional job offer.
• Engineering Assistant 2:
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, or land surveying from an ABET-accredited institution and one year of entry-level experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 (or equivalent), or
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, or land surveying from a non-ABET-accredited institution and:
    • EIT or LSIT certificate (or verification of passing FE/FS exam), and
    • One year of entry-level experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 (or equivalent).
  • Five years of progressively responsible subprofessional engineering experience, including two years as a Journey-level Engineering Technician or Drafting Technician 3 (or equivalent), or
  • Graduate study in engineering/architecture may substitute for required experience (2 semester/3 quarter hours = 1 month of experience).
• Engineering Assistant 3:
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, or land surveying from an ABET-accredited institution and two years of experience, including one year at the working or intermediate trainee level (e.g., as an Engineering Assistant 2 or equivalent), or
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from a non-ABET-accredited institution and:
    • EIT certificate (or verification of passing FE exam), and
    • Two years of experience, including one year at the working or intermediate trainee level (e.g., as an Engineering Assistant 2 or equivalent).
  • Substitutions:
    • Four years of any combination of ABET-accredited postsecondary education in engineering/architecture/land surveying (3 semester/4 quarter hours = 1 month) and/or relevant experience may substitute for the required degree.
    • Graduate study in engineering/architecture may substitute for required experience (2 semester/3 quarter hours = 1 month).
