About the role
The City of Vernon is seeking an Engineering Aide to join the Public Works Department. This position involves performing a variety of routine engineering tasks, assisting with project planning and design, and supporting survey activities.
Responsibilities
- Uses drafting tools and software to prepare construction drawings and maps reflecting topography, drainage, and other relevant information.
- Assists with the preparation and evaluation of City documents and contracts.
- Prepares plans and calculations for construction projects.
- Maintains records and assists in report preparation.
- Coordinates installation of temporary water meters.
- Performs plan checks and inspects materials and workmanship.
- Enters and updates data for City projects.
- Responds to public inquiries and complaints.
- Surveys existing roads and collects data for engineering projects.
- Participates in field inspections and locates underground traffic signal conduits.
Requirements
Essential functions include using drafting tools, preparing construction drawings, and performing survey activities. Must have a high school diploma or equivalent and two years of experience in construction management, drafting, field surveying, or engineering. A valid California driver's license is required.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or related field is highly desirable and can substitute for the required two years of experience.
- Knowledge of city policies and procedures, fundamental engineering computations, and customer service methods.
- Ability to interpret and apply state and federal statutes, codes, and regulations.
- Effective communication and problem-solving skills.
Skills
- Proficiency in using AutoCAD and other drafting software.
- Strong analytical and computational skills.
