Engineer - Transmission Engineering

About the Role
This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Co., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. The Transmission Engineer designs and conducts analyses of wood and steel transmission structures and structure foundations, calculates wire sags and clearances using PLS-CADD, calculates NESC and OSHA clearance requirements, develops design packages for construction, creates bills-of-material for transmission line projects, and establishes standards and process flows for transmission structures and lines. The role involves technical research, analysis, and implementation support.
The ideal candidate will have working knowledge of PLS-CADD, with additional experience in the Power Line Systems design suite and foundation design using FAD Tools, Ensoft, or similar programs as a plus. This is an on-site position located in Greensburg, PA.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain a safe environment for the transmission line network to ensure the safety of coworkers, contractors, work crews, and the general public.
- Create engineering designs and standards for transmission line projects, including wood and steel structures, structure foundations, line plans and profiles, wire arrangements, field reports, transmission switch drawings, and wire sag charts.
- Direct survey crews and drafting personnel to gather and record data for transmission line design.
- Support work crews during construction through office work and field visits.
- Coordinate designs with other FirstEnergy areas, including Siting and Permitting, Project Development, Project Management, Maintenance, Forestry, Real Estate, Substations, Construction, and Regional operating companies.
- Collaborate with industry and regulatory groups to learn and advocate best practices (e.g., EPRI, CEATI, EEI, NATF).
- Represent FirstEnergy at local public zoning hearings, planning committee meetings, and state utility commission hearings as a subject matter expert.
- Provide engineering support and mentorship to employees on transmission line standards, procedures, designs, and issues.
- Review transmission line encroachments to ensure NESC clearance requirements are met and coordinate responses with ROW Services and Transmission Line Maintenance personnel.
- Assist during emergencies and storm-related activities, which may require time out of the office.
- Travel throughout the FirstEnergy system and to industry-related activities as necessary to support transmission initiatives.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering (BSEE, BSCE, BSME) from an ABET-accredited institution is required. Acceptable alternatives:
- A Professional Engineer’s (PE) License.
- A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering or a technical field of study (non-ABET) plus an advanced degree in Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering from a university with an ABET-accredited Bachelor’s program.
- Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Certificate is preferred.
- Minimum of two years of engineering experience.
- Demonstrated leadership skills, including the ability to communicate, motivate, and drive positive change.
- Strong organizational, computer, and problem-solving skills.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD and PLS-CADD is a plus.
- Effective analytical and reasoning capabilities, with strong communication skills to present information confidently to peers, industry groups, regulatory bodies, and leadership.
- Ability to handle complex issues and adhere to FirstEnergy’s Code of Conduct and industry compliance obligations.
