Engineer Trainee/Assistant Engineer (Civil/Transportation) NY HELPS - Region 10
About the role
Assist the Regional Load Rating Engineer with performing level 1 and 2 load rating calculations. Support or serve on one or more of the Region’s Asset Teams. Assist with bridge inspection in the field, sometimes requiring climbing structures. Contribute to Structural Safety Assurance Activities and prepare CADD drawings for routine or emergency structures design projects. Develop routine project designs, proposals, and specifications for bridge design, bridge safety and integrity, maintenance and protection of traffic, and other public safety matters. May be assigned specialty projects or tasks by the Regional Structures and Materials Engineer (RSME). Occasionally work in the field, including safely lifting ladders and operating lift equipment. May serve a role within the Incident Command System to support the department's response to regional and statewide emergency situations.

Requirements
This position is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). Candidates must meet the open competitive minimum qualifications for this role.
Qualifications
Engineer Trainee
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering or engineering technology as listed below, or
- Proof of passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) and one year of full-time qualifying engineering experience
As an Engineer Trainee, you will serve a 24-month traineeship leading to Assistant Engineer, Grade 20. To advance, you must obtain proof of passing the FE and successfully complete the traineeship. Early advancement may be possible at the discretion of the appointing authority if you pass the FE and complete twelve months of the traineeship.
Assistant Engineer
- Proof of passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) and a qualifying bachelor’s degree or higher as listed below, or
- Proof of passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) and one year of full-time qualifying engineering experience
Qualifying degrees: Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering, Construction Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering Management, Construction Engineering Management Technology, Geological Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Hydraulics Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Structural Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Transportation Planning and Engineering, or Engineering Science with a recognized concentration in any of the above.
Qualifying experience: One year of full-time engineering experience with transportation projects related to highways/roadways, railroads, bridges, airports, waterways, building structures, or traffic management and safety systems.
Candidates may also qualify for permanent competitive appointment if reachable from the appropriate Civil Service eligible list or eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.
Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Required educational credentials must be awarded by an institution accredited by a U.S. Department of Education-recognized agency. If awarded outside the U.S., independent verification of equivalency is required.
Pay
- Engineer Trainee: Starting salary of $66,951
- Assistant Engineer: Starting salary of $97,673 (includes $84,173 base salary plus up to $13,500 geographic pay differential)
- Maximum compensation for Assistant Engineer: $107,621 (includes $94,121 standard job rate plus $13,500 geographic pay differential)
- Additional adjustments: Mid-Hudson Adjustment of $2,000 or Downstate Adjustment of $4,000 may apply depending on location
