Engineer Trainee/Assistant Engineer (Civil) - NYS HELPS - (Region 9)

Duties Description

Under the direction and supervision of a licensed professional Engineer, incumbents perform a variety of duties depending on assignment. Typical duties include:

• Prepare 3D plans for highway and bridge projects using CADD.
• Aid with bridge inspections, structural evaluations, and load ratings.
• Assist with the preparation of project reports (e.g., scoping reports, design reports, drainage reports).
• Develop notes and specifications for specialty work.
• Support Department needs in other locations, including remote participation and occasional travel.

Minimum Qualifications

This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). Engineer Trainee/Assistant Engineer positions require:

• Either a bachelor's degree or higher in engineering or engineering technology as listed below, OR
• Proof of passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) AND one year of full-time engineering experience as listed below.

Engineer Trainee

• Pass the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE).
• Complete a 24-month traineeship leading to Assistant Engineer, Grade 20.
• Obtain proof of passing the FE and complete 12 months of the traineeship to advance to Assistant Engineer.

Assistant Engineer

• Pass the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE).
• Hold a qualifying bachelor's degree or higher in engineering or engineering technology as listed below, OR
• Have one year of full-time qualifying engineering experience as listed below.

Qualifying Degrees and Experience

• Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering, etc.
• Parks, roads, bridges, recreational facilities, water/wastewater treatment facilities.

Starting Salary

The starting salary for an Engineer Trainee is $66,951, and for an Assistant Engineer is $81,193. The maximum compensation is $101,121, with additional geographic pay differentials and adjustments applicable.
