About the role

With more than 25,000 employees – including third-, fourth- and even fifth-generation shipbuilders – HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division is the largest industrial employer in Virginia. We’re the sole designer, builder and refueler of U.S. Navy nuclear aircraft carriers and one of two providers of U.S. Navy nuclear submarines. Our diverse and innovative team of professionals ranges from skilled trades to project managers, engineers and software developers to solution architects, technical subject matter experts, and system users. We collaborate together at the forefront of technology, manufacturing, and integration of the most powerful and survivable naval ships in the world.

Performs technical planning, system integration, verification and validation, cost and risk, and supportability and effectiveness analyses for total systems. Analyses are performed at all levels of total system product to include: concept, design, fabrication, test, installation, operation, maintenance and disposal. Ensures the logical and systematic conversion of customer or product requirements into total systems solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints. Performs functional analysis, timeline analysis, detail trade studies, requirements allocation and interface definition studies to translate customer requirements into hardware and software specifications.

Join the Propulsion and Reactor Engineering Planning Yard (PREPY) as a key member of our newly established Lifecycle Management (LCM) team. This is a high-impact opportunity to serve as the "tip of the spear" in driving proactive, data-driven logistical solutions for the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program (NNPP). As an LCM Engineer, you will bridge the critical gap between complex engineering and logistics services. You will not only manage the "what" and "how much" of system lifecycles but will be the primary voice explaining the "why" and "how" of our strategic initiatives. You will work across a broad portfolio of carrier (A4W and A1B) fleet support and new construction systems to ensure the long-term sustainability and operational readiness of the fleet.

Responsibilities

  • Technical Subject Matter Expertise: Provide deep technical guidance for A4W and A1B engineering systems and processes to inform lifecycle decisions.
  • Strategic Roadmap Integration: Engage and integrate cognizant engineering teams along technology roadmaps, ensuring that technical milestones align with procurement and logistics realities.
  • Strategic vs. Tactical Execution: Utilize data and advanced tooling (such as COOPIR/IMR) to delineate and execute immediate tactical needs versus long-term strategic goals.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Act as a technical liaison between the LCM group, the OM group, Navy Procurements, and external stakeholders including NAVSEA, NNL, BPMI, and NAVSUP.
  • Drive Accountability: Ensure the efficient execution of LCM initiatives and foster a culture of ownership and accountability to improve PREPY’s cradle-to-grave LCM quality.
  • Risk Mitigation: Identify high-risk systems and develop technical solutions to address obsolescence and spare parts availability.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program and 5 years of relevant exempt experience; OR Master’s Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience; OR Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.

Qualifications

  • Technical Proficiency: Demonstrated expertise in engineering systems and processes, specifically associated with A4W and A1B systems.
  • LCM Experience: Proven experience in lifecycle management, obsolescence management, or the development of technology roadmaps.
  • NNPP Knowledge: Experience working within the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program (NNPP).
  • Communication Skills: Ability to translate complex technical data into actionable strategies for stakeholders at various levels of the organization.
  • Analytical Mindset: Ability to use data-driven tools to identify trends, anomalies, and risks within a complex supply chain.
  • Leadership Qualities: A self-starter capable of driving initiatives forward with a strong sense of ownership.

Benefits

  • Strategic Influence: The chance to move the needle on how the Navy manages its most critical propulsion systems.
  • Professional Growth: Opportunities for continuous learning and development within a high-performing engineering environment.
  • Innovation-Driven Culture: A dynamic workplace that values proactive problem-solving and the implementation of best practices.
  • Medical, prescription drug, dental and vision plan choices
  • On-site health centers and tele-medicine
  • Wellness resources and employee assistance programs
  • Savings plan options (401K) and financial education/planning tools
  • Life insurance
  • Tuition reimbursement
  • Employee discounts
  • Early childhood and post-secondary education scholarships

Pay

Salary range: $99,000.00 to $122,000.00. The anticipated salary range represents the estimated base pay for this role. Final compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, and other job-related factors, and may vary from the posted range.

Schedule

  • Full-time, 1st shift
  • Not eligible for telework/virtual work
  • Travel required up to 10% of the time
