About the role
Northrop Grumman Aerostructures Business Unit (ASBU) has an opening for a first-shift Manufacturing Engineer/Principal Manufacturing Engineer to join our team in Clearfield, UT at the Aeronautics Composite Center Elevated (ACCE) building. This position supports the Airbus A350 value stream in the manufacturing of carbon fiber stiffeners and frames.
The selected candidate will provide critical support in a high-volume, high-mix production environment, working closely with Operations, Quality, Industrial Engineering, and Maintenance. The goal is to minimize downtime on the production line by troubleshooting, problem-solving, and proactively identifying areas of concern. Engineers work to continuously improve processes, eliminating variation and waste while building in quality.
This position supports a Monday–Friday 9/80 schedule and can be filled at either the Manufacturing Engineer Level 2 or Principal Manufacturing Engineer Level 3, depending on qualifications.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate within a Cross-Functional Team (CFT) to develop and implement process improvements as well as support site initiatives.
- Work closely with manufacturing personnel in the highly automated production of composite aerospace components.
- Author, modify, and audit shop floor electronic work instructions (EWIs).
- Perform root cause and corrective action (RCCA) activities to permanently eliminate defects.
- Troubleshoot production, equipment, program, and tooling issues and implement improvements and solutions.
The ideal candidate is a self-starter with strong written and verbal communication skills, enjoys collaborating with diverse teams in a fast-paced environment, and serves as a process owner within the Integrated Product Team (IPT).
Requirements
Manufacturing Engineer Level 2
- Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) and 1 year of work experience in a manufacturing environment; or a Master’s in STEM with 0 years of experience.
- Microsoft Office experience, specifically with Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Ability to read and understand engineering drawings and specifications.
- Working knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
Principal Manufacturing Engineer Level 3
- Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field and 4 years of work experience in a manufacturing environment; or a Master’s degree in a STEM field and 3 years of experience; or a PhD with 0 years of experience.
- Experience with Microsoft Office, specifically Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Experience reading and understanding engineering drawings and specifications.
- Experience with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
Preferred Qualifications
- Degree in Manufacturing, Aerospace, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering.
- Experience with composite layup or composite materials in general.
- Experience working with automated fiber placement or automated tape layup.
- Experience utilizing CNC interfaces (Fanuc and Siemens).
- Experience using Solumina G8 or similar systems.
- Demonstrated understanding of root cause/corrective action processes and techniques.
- Experience using RCCA tools such as Five Why, Pareto, fishbone, etc.
- Experience drafting, maintaining, and modifying work instructions and/or process specifications.
Pay
Primary Level (Manufacturing Engineer Level 2) Salary Range: $72,100.00 – $108,100.00.
Secondary Level (Principal Manufacturing Engineer Level 3) Salary Range: $89,400.00 – $134,200.00.
Base salary offers consider factors such as scope, responsibilities, experience, education, skills, and market conditions.
