About the role

America’s second oldest horse-racing track, Fair Grounds has been a New Orleans staple since 1852. We are a premiere entertainment venue presenting thoroughbred and exotic-animal races, slots, video poker, and simulcasting year-round. Fair Grounds operates a slot-machine gaming facility and 13 off-track betting parlors throughout southeast Louisiana.

This position is responsible for the repair and upkeep of the property, including barns, grandstand, office buildings, and grounds. Under the direct supervision of the Facilities Supervisor or a higher-level operations member, the employee will perform a variety of tasks in the maintenance, repair, or operation of various equipment and facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Perform or arrange for repairs, such as complete overhauls, replacement of defective valves, gaskets, or bearings, pumps, compressors, pneumatic, and air-conditioning equipment.
  • Monitor and inspect equipment, switches, valves, gauges, alarms, safety devices, and meters to detect leaks or malfunctions and to ensure equipment is operating efficiently and safely.
  • Clean and lubricate equipment and make minor adjustments as needed using hand tools.
  • Maintain daily logs of operation, maintenance, and safety activities, including test results, instrument readings, and details of equipment malfunctions and maintenance work.
  • Monitor and inspect the building’s plumbing systems, making repairs or replacing water, sewer, or waste lines, and performing daily maintenance activities.
  • Check and test electrical systems to determine voltages using voltage meters.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be 21 years or older.
  • Must have a valid State Driver’s License.
  • Must have a 1st or 2nd class City of New Orleans Stationary Engineer’s certification (Boiler and Air Conditioning).
  • Must be able to obtain a Racing License from the Louisiana Racing Commission.

Qualifications

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common documentation.
  • Ability to write and present information to management in a reasonable manner.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from guests, staff, or regulatory agencies.
  • Ability to perform normal mathematical computations related to current duties.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of instructions and deal with several variables.

  • Occasionally works in extreme heat or cold conditions.
