ENGINEER MECHANICAL 2
The Role
Supports shipboard structural modifications, fabrication of equipment foundations, and shipboard corrosion evaluation / mitigation.
Reviews and executes mechanical procedures, and certification documentation.
Serves as a liaison between ship construction and outfitting, evaluating non-conformances, developing repair recommendations, and verifying implementation.
Conducts shipchecks to confirm as-built conditions and ensure design compliance with engineering standards.
Interfaces with NAVSEA, Electric Boat, and internal departments to coordinate design and testing activities and resolve technical issues.
Provides on-site engineering support to resolve field issues related to alignment, fit-up, welding, and dimensional control.
Prepares and presents technical reports, analyses, and recommendations to management and external customers.
Key Responsibilities

- Carry out shipchecks to confirm as-built conditions and ensure design compliance with engineering standards.

Must Have
- Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of relevant exempt experience;
- Master’s Degree and 0 year of relevant professional experience;
- Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
Nice to Have
- Experience or coursework in one or more of the following: Mechanical components and fabrication, Valves and pumps, Assembly, and final outfitting, Seals and hydraulic actuators, Assembly, and final outfitting
- Understanding of mechanical engineering and design principles and how they apply to shipbuilding
- Knowledge of submarine/carriers machinery and how it interfaces with structural, electrical and hydraulic systems
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with proven technical writing ability
- Experience working in multi-disciplinary engineering teams
- DOD Security Clearance is preferred, but not required to start
- Strong technical writing and customer relations skills
- Six Sigma and/or Lean training/certification
