About the role
The Assistant Engineer is responsible for managing the operation and maintenance of the vessel's engineering systems under the Chief Engineer's supervision. This role involves assisting the Chief Engineer and other engineering personnel in operating and maintaining the vessel's machinery, performing regular inspections, maintenance, and repairs, monitoring and troubleshooting engineering systems, and following safety protocols.
Responsibilities
- Aiding the Chief Engineer and other engineering personnel in operating and maintaining the vessel's machinery, including engines, generators, pumps, and refrigeration systems.
- Performing regular inspections, maintenance, and repairs on mechanical equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation.
- Monitoring and troubleshooting engineering systems to identify and resolve any issues that may arise during the voyage.
- Following safety protocols and regulations to ensure a safe working environment for the crew and the vessel's cargo.
- Collaborating with other crew members to coordinate operational activities and ensure smooth functioning of the vessel.
Requirements
- USCG Merchant Mariner Credential, international and national endorsements capable of foreign voyages.
- Must hold a valid USCG/STCW medical certificate.
- Must hold a valid TWIC card and a U.S. Passport.
- Familiarity with EMD’s and Detroit Generators is preferred.
- Education/Experience: Maritime Academy graduate preferred; Prior experience as an Assistant Engineer preferred.
- ABS Nautical Systems NS5/HELM experience preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Able to work in confined spaces, carrying heavy tools, climbing and descending ladders, consistently asked to lift and carry loads at least 40 pounds.
- Must have current USCG STCW Medical Certificate, renewed every 2 years.
