About the Work Unit

The Traffic and Safety Construction unit is located in Denver. This work unit manages the construction phase of Traffic Engineering projects, reviews and comments on plans and specifications prior to advertisement, and ensures that contractors' construction methods, procedures, materials, and end products comply with engineering details, CDOT specifications, and international building codes. Responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring safe and efficient development of transportation infrastructure projects within CDOT Region-1 right of way
  • Resolving contractor disputes and claims to ensure timely project completion within budgetary constraints
  • Providing support and review of working drawings
  • Ensuring As-Built plans are completed and submitted
  • Providing traffic engineering expertise to construction field personnel
  • Tracking and documenting construction activities as detailed in the CDOT Construction Manual
  • Participating in the selection of consultants, monitoring contract administration, approving contract payments, and reviewing monthly progress reports

Responsibilities

As the Engineering-In-Training III, Traffic Construction, you will work under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer, applying engineering theories, principles, and practices to construction projects while expanding your engineering knowledge. This position manages assigned engineering construction projects as the Project Engineer. Key duties include:

  • Overseeing construction operations to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and design purpose
  • Ensuring conformance to safety best practices by monitoring construction activities
  • Evaluating materials, equipment, and systems for acceptability in construction projects
  • Assisting design engineers in constructability reviews
  • Applying engineering theories and principles to situations not covered by present design standards
  • Using CDOT Construction Manual, M&S Standards, and CDOT Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction
  • Fluency in using CDOT’s AASHTOWare Construction and Materials Application Program
  • Approving and certifying contractor's construction methods, lane closure procedures, materials, and end products for compliance with project plans, CDOT M&S Standards, and MUTCD
  • Ensuring all construction requirements are met, including adherence to plans, CDOT standards, and local agency standards
  • Ensuring pay documentation is generated and stored appropriately
  • Ensuring compliance with Davis Bacon Wages, local minimum wages, and federal regulations for all staff on projects
  • Providing guidance to local agencies in completing project documentation
  • Creating and modifying processes to improve local agency compliance with Federal regulations
  • Analyzing requests for payment from local agencies and issuing payments when appropriate
  • Understanding and applying federal, state, and local laws relevant to federally funded CDOT construction projects
  • Ensuring contractors submit all required documentation to meet state and federal civil rights regulations
  • Initiating, preparing, designing, negotiating, and authorizing contract modification orders
  • Compiling relevant documentation and authorizing final settlements
  • Ascertaining the validity of contractor requests or disputes for additional compensation
  • Analyzing the feasibility of contractor's construction methods and schedules
  • Attending all required training and classes

Work Environment

  • Schedule: Primarily 8:00 am – 5:00 pm work hours
  • Hybrid schedule with a combination of in-office and remote work (approximately 50% field, 50% office)
  • Travel required during work hours throughout Metro Denver/Front Range
  • Occasional overnight travel 1-3 times a year throughout Colorado
  • Required to operate CDOT vehicles
  • Working roadsides and near hazardous environments

Requirements

  • Current enrollment as an Engineer Intern by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors
  • One (1) year of professional experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position

Substitutions:

  • Current, valid licensure as a Professional Engineer from the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers, and Professional Land Surveyors will substitute for the enrollment as an Engineer Intern
  • Appropriate education in addition to that required for enrollment as an Engineer Intern will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis

College transcripts are required if using education to qualify. Transcripts must show the name of the school, completed credit hours, and (if applicable) that a degree was conferred. Transcripts from colleges or universities outside of the United States must have been assessed for U.S. equivalency by a NACES educational credential evaluation service.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must pass a pre-employment screening, which may include a social security number trace, criminal records check, public court records check, educational records, and driving records checks
  • Required to obtain registration as a licensed Professional Engineer from the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers, and Professional Land Surveyors within eight years of hire

  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and adapt to changing assignments
  • Ability to take initiative to solve problems in an innovative manner
  • Ability to work with a variety of stakeholders with sensitivity to their needs and priorities
  • Effective interpersonal and relationship-building skills
  • Strong time and project management skills, including prioritization and multi-tasking ability
  • Excellent reasoning, investigative, analytical, and problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent facilitation, presentation, and communication skills, both written and oral
  • Strong attention to technical detail and accuracy

  • Fluency in MS Word, MS Excel, Gmail, Google Applications, SAP, AASHTO PMED, and the ability to quickly learn other software systems
