Engineer III / Senior (Long Term Plant Reliability)

About the Role
As a Long-Term Plant Reliability Engineer III/Senior, you will help ensure the long-term reliability and performance of critical power generation assets. By applying engineering expertise, analytical thinking, and strategic planning, you'll support decisions that keep energy systems operating safely and efficiently. Your work directly contributes to APS's commitment to delivering reliable power to the communities we serve while helping prepare for future energy needs.
Responsibilities
- Analyze plant performance, equipment reliability, and engineering data to identify opportunities for long-term improvement.
- Develop and support long-range system and asset plans that help maintain reliable power generation.
- Evaluate engineering proposals, technical studies, and business cases to support informed decision-making.
- Collaborate with engineers, operations teams, and leaders to solve complex technical challenges and improve asset performance.
- Provide technical guidance and share expertise with team members on engineering methods, analysis, and best practices.
- Present technical findings and recommendations to stakeholders to support reliability and operational goals.
- Prepare engineering plans, designs, analysis, specifications, cost estimates, evaluations, studies, technical reviews, investigations and verifications while complying with design, regulatory, operating and maintenance requirements.
- Ensure engineering analyses, design, project control, schedule commitments, or oversight work is technically sound, cost effective, and in compliance with established standards, codes, and regulations.
- Check and review analysis, evaluations, and investigations of others.
- Interface with customers and other departments to ensure project objectives are understood and that work scope meets customer requirements, budget and schedule.
- Contact customers and various levels of management to obtain or present technical data.
- Present the results of designs, studies, or projects (in terms of new techniques or approaches) to subordinates, colleagues, management, and customers.
- Enhance department performance and productivity by formulating, coordinating, performing analysis, and making recommendations for improvements.
- Provide technical assistance and guidance to department personnel to enhance department performance and productivity.
- May provide oversight of engineering technical programs by managing program requirements, working with cross-organizational partners, reviewing and internalizing operating experience, and coordinating corrective actions to ensure engineering program elements remain healthy.
- May assume responsibility for small- to medium-scale projects, including planning, designing, scheduling, and coordinating all facets of the project.
- Identify potential schedule or quality problems and initiate corrective action.
- Take initiative to eliminate barriers and use resources to ensure desired results.
- May interface with outside agencies and regulatory authorities.
- Provide technical guidance and leadership to less experienced engineers.
- May participate in developing long-range strategies for significant site problems.
- Provide input to projects and recommend modifications to increase operating efficiency and/or review design and documentation of projects to ensure compliance with design specifications, schedules, and regulatory requirements.
- Remain cognizant of current technology and engineering developments as well as industry and competitive developments.

Qualifications
Engineer III: A four-year Bachelor's Degree in an engineering discipline or related applied science discipline (Materials Science/Metallurgy, Physics, Chemistry, Nuclear, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Electronics, Computer Science, Environmental, Chemical, Structural) from an ABET accredited institution, an International Engineering Alliance (IEA) recognized institution, or an ABET Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) AND five (5) years working experience in Engineering-related positions. (A four-year bachelor of Engineering Technology degree is not considered an automatic equivalent for a B.S. degree in Engineering. A review of the degree program curriculum must be completed by Engineering department management.)
Senior Engineer: A four-year Bachelor's Degree in an engineering discipline or related applied science discipline (Materials Science/Metallurgy, Physics, Chemistry, Nuclear, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Electronics, Computer Science, Environmental, Chemical, Structural) from an ABET accredited institution, an International Engineering Alliance (IEA) recognized institution, or an ABET Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) AND eight (8) years working experience in Engineering-related positions. Skills
- Problem analysis/resolution techniques.
- Knowledge of applicable codes, standards, practices, methods, and safety standards in the area of applicable engineering discipline.
- Experience in the utility industry.
- Experience in nuclear industry for jobs at Palo Verde.
- Professional Engineer licensure.
Additional Information
- May be subject to shift work.
- Any PVNGS employee may be called upon to serve as a member of the Emergency Response Organization (ERO) and will be expected to fulfill their obligation as an ERO member.
- Any PVNGS employee may be called upon to support a refueling or short-notice outage, including line roles and responsibilities as necessary to execute outage activities. These are conditions of employment at PVNGS.
- This position may require access to and/or use of information subject to U.S. Export Control Laws. Therefore, some positions may require applicants to be a U.S. person (U.S. Citizen, U.S. Lawful Permanent Resident, Political Asylee, or Refugee).
- For positions at Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Stations (PVNGS), all openings will require applicants to be a U.S. person.
- Onsite: Requires work to be performed in the field and/or at an APS facility. Depending on the responsibilities of the role, this may include working at a power plant, job site, or in the community. Employees are expected to reside in Arizona (or New Mexico for Four Corners-based employees).
- Hybrid: Employees in hybrid roles work both in their home offices (virtually) and alongside their colleagues (in person). Hybrid employees are expected to work about 40% of their time in-person at an APS or other (non-home office) location. Employees are expected to reside in Arizona (or New Mexico for Four Corners-based employees).
- Home based: Home-based employees primarily work from their home offices and come into an APS facility on an as-needed basis. Employees are expected to reside in Arizona (or New Mexico for Four Corners-based employees).
- Any PVGS employee may be called upon for random Fitness For Duty Testing (FFD) during scheduled working hours. Employees must report to FFD at Palo Verde as soon as reasonably practicable, but no more than 120 minutes after being notified. Employees who are onsite when notified will have no more than 60 minutes to report after being notified.
