Engineer III, Manufacturing Engineering (Process Engineering)

Role reports to the Allentown, PA site and the Clinical Trials Division (CTD), which partners with pharmaceutical and biotech customers worldwide to ensure timely and accurate delivery of therapies. CTD provides project management, packaging, distribution, clinical supply optimization, and specialty logistics services across over 15 countries.

About the role

As a Manufacturing Engineer III at Thermo Fisher Scientific, you will optimize production processes, implement new technologies, and drive continuous improvement initiatives. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure efficient manufacture of high-quality products while maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements. This role contributes to enabling customers to make the world healthier, cleaner, and safer through innovative manufacturing solutions.

Responsibilities

• Manage process improvement projects and provide technical expertise for new product introductions.
• Develop and validate manufacturing processes, and implement automation solutions.
• Optimize existing processes in collaboration with Quality, Production, and other departments to ensure consistent product quality and regulatory compliance.
• Drive cost reductions, improve efficiency, and enhance manufacturing capabilities using analytical skills and engineering expertise.
• Apply Good Manufacturing Principles (GMP) in all areas of responsibility.
• Promote the company vision of the 4 I's: Integrity, Intensity, Innovation, and Involvement.
• Conduct all activities in a safe and efficient manner.
• Focus on long-term continuous improvement through interaction with Engineering and Operations staff.
• Recommend methods for improving worker efficiency and reducing waste (e.g., restructuring job duties, reorganizing workflow, relocating workstations, purchasing new equipment).
• Collaborate with Production to modify workflow barriers and increase throughput.
• Identify and resolve process flow barriers through daily observations and interaction with production personnel.
• Recommend cost-saving initiatives aligned with business objectives, current projects, and future investments in technology and manufacturing processes.
• Drive engineering projects to increase machine speeds, reduce labor hours, and reduce reject rates.
• Complete deviation investigations, change controls, and corrective/preventive actions.
• Evaluate and standardize machine setups to maximize running speed and quality.
• Provide and maintain supporting documentation for designs and projects.
• Provide technical specifications for engineering project designs and machine upgrades.

Requirements

• Adherence to all Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and safety standards.
• Cleanroom environment restrictions: no hair products, jewelry, makeup, nail polish, perfume, exposed piercings, or facial hair allowed.
• Some degree of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required, including safety glasses, gowning, gloves, lab coat, and ear plugs.
• Standard work schedule: Monday to Friday.

Qualifications

• A four-year Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university in Packaging, Mechanical, Industrial, or related Engineering discipline (highly preferred).
• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• 2 years of relevant engineering experience with a BS degree, or an equivalent combination of technical certification and 5–10 years of applicable GMP, pharmaceutical, food, or manufacturing experience without a degree.

Skills

• Well-versed in process improvement and industrial design applications for a job shop environment.
• Prior mechanical and process equipment experience.
• Results-oriented with experience training and coaching others.
• Baseline mechanical aptitude established by testing.
• Strong analytical skills and ability to multitask in response to shifting priorities.
• Proficient with computer software (MS Office) and expertise with spreadsheets.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Mastery of skills required to read, understand, and adhere to SOPs and policies in a GMP environment.
