About the Role
A Firmware Engineer will design, modify, and evaluate embedded software and/or programmable logic for electronic apparatus, components, or circuitry used in electronic equipment and devices. This role involves engineering work in research, development, design of new products, and/or sustaining existing products.
Responsibilities
- Utilize advanced programming skills in C and assembly languages in an embedded environment, including bare-metal microcontrollers.
- Apply knowledge of microcontrollers, hardware circuit theory, software development tools, and the architecture of Power Supply or ARM-based microcontroller systems.
- Troubleshoot and debug hardware and software systems issues.
- Exercise engineering judgment to select and develop methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for project success.
- Collaborate with hardware engineers, electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, and program managers on product development.
- Communicate effectively and persuade cross-functional teams, including hardware teams, at multiple organizational levels.
- Prepare internal and external software documentation, such as Requirements Specifications, Design Specifications, and Test plans.
- Apply broad technical knowledge of electronic apparatus, components, and circuitry, including DC circuits, AC to DC converters, AC power factor correction, high power transistors and rectifiers, digital and analog loop stability, magnetic design, worst-case component analysis, digital hardware, firmware, test and measurement systems, and electrical/safety regulatory compliance.
- Diagnose issues of diverse scope related to design, field performance, root cause/failure analysis, reliability, and manufacturing test yields of existing power supply products using formal investigation methods; recommend and implement corrective actions.
- Implement advanced software development techniques in compliance with technical reference architecture.
- Participate in code reviews to improve software stability and maintainability of an aging code base.
- Perform technical review, design analysis, development, and selection of hardware and mission-critical computer software.
Work Environment
Location: Eden Prairie, MN. Works in a noisy, fast-paced power development lab and standard office environment.
Requirements
- Ability to follow standard practices and procedures in analyzing situations or data.
- Ability to learn and use professional engineering concepts, including analytical methods, computer-aided design tools, diagnostic instruments, and lab skills.
- Broad technical knowledge of electronic apparatus, components, or circuitry, including RF circuits, AC to DC converters, AC power factor correction, high power transistors and rectifiers, digital and analog loop stability, magnetic design, and test/measurement systems.
- Ability to apply company policies and procedures to solve routine to complex technical issues.
- Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
- Genuine interest in electrical and embedded development.
- Excellent problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication skills.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience with object-oriented programming, system processes, and scripting languages.
Qualifications
- Experience with embedded C programming and in-circuit debugging.
- Experience with serial communication protocols such as UART, SPI, and I2C.
- Experience with power electronic concepts is desirable.
- Experience with basic circuit analysis and understanding circuit schematics.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Software Engineering.
- Cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0.
Pay
The range of starting pay for this role is $75,000 - $105,000 per year.
