Duties & Responsibilities
- Attends pre-construction meetings
- Prepares a written daily report documenting construction activities
- Prepares a timesheet daily which records all hours worked
- Consults with Resident Engineers, Bridge Engineers, Project Engineers, other project representatives, and contractors' superintendents on work progress and construction problems
- Coordinates field testing of construction materials and construction surveys
- Covers communication between district/division/Department of Public Safety and other external entities
- Monitors project phasing and traffic control plans for compliance with approved safety standards
- Observes and inspects ongoing construction work
- Performs construction record-keeping activities; recommends payments to contractors; prepares reports
- Trains and mentors less experienced inspectors on work methods
- Documents work progress and issues arising throughout scope of project
Skills/Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field, a valid certificate as an Engineer-in-Training or licensed as a Professional Civil Engineer in California, and 2 years of experience performing construction inspection of roadways
- Two years of education beyond the 12th grade in engineering or related field and a minimum of 4 years of experience performing construction inspection of roadways
- Master’s or doctorate degree in civil engineering and a minimum of 2 years of experience in roadway construction inspection of roadways
- Strong communication, verbal and written are required
- Basic computer skills required. Microsoft Word, Excel
- Caltrans Experience, highly desired
- Knowledge of Caltrans and Local Agency Standard Plans and Specifications and Greenbook
Physical Demands/Working Conditions
- Regularly required to sit for up to 6 to 8 hours per day while working at a computer, during meeting or while driving
- Frequently required to walk up to 2 hours per day while performing field visits
- Frequent use of hands for repetitive reaching, repetitive hand use
- Physical agility to perform tasks requiring a full range of body movements including lifting, pushing, pulling, bending, stretching, twisting, reaching, squatting, climbing, crawling, kneeling, or assuming crouched positions
- Frequent use of safety equipment such as a hard hat and safety vest
- Work in areas not well ventilated such as utility vaults
- Work outdoors or work on uneven ground or floor spaces
- Work at elevations above ground level and on marine vessels/structures
- Available for after hour emergency response
