Engineer II, Backend APIs

About the role

Magnite is seeking an experienced engineer to join the Reporting & Insights team. This role is based in Los Angeles, CA and Broomfield, CO with a hybrid schedule.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and release APIs that power reporting and analytics applications.
• Collaborate with Product, UI, and Data engineers to deliver features that publishers and DSPs rely on.
• Build intuitive and easy-to-consume APIs with clear contracts, versioning strategies, pagination, filtering, batching, and strong SLAs/SLOs.
• Promote code quality through well-tested, maintainable code, thoughtful reviews, design docs, and pragmatic documentation.
• Own services in production, including dashboards, alerting, capacity and load testing, cost-aware design, and reliability improvements.
• Leverage AI-assisted tools in the development process.

Requirements

• 3+ years of software engineering experience in modern Java for high-throughput, low-latency web services.
• Hands-on experience with Postgres (or other RDBMS) for modeling, migrations, indexing, and query optimization.
• Proficiency with Git/GitHub and modern team practices.
• Clear, empathetic communication and a collaborative mindset.

Qualifications

• Primary development experience in modern (latest JVM version) Java for high-throughput, low-latency back-end web services.
• Exposure to cloud providers (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and container orchestration (Docker/Kubernetes).
• Experience with asynchronous programming patterns, high levels of concurrency, and frameworks such as Vert.x and Dropwizard.
• Experience with event-driven or streaming architectures.
• Understanding of authN/Z patterns (OAuth2/JWT), rate limiting, and API security.
• Observability tools and practices (metrics, tracing, logs) and load/performance testing.
• Knowledge of Real-Time Bidding (RTB), SSPs, DSPs, and ad delivery systems is a plus.

Benefits

• Base salary range: $125,000 – $135,000 in CA, $115,000 – $125,000 in CO.
