About the Role

Provide substation physical engineering, technical support, and supervision to a transmission substation engineering and design team to deliver safe, cost-effective, and quality engineering and design services. Lead discipline work for projects, perform responsible charge engineering duties, and manage project schedules and budgets. Support proposal development, project cost estimating, and business development.

Responsibilities

  • Apply advanced understanding of substation design, including equipment arrangements, lightning protection, grounding, lighting, equipment specifics, and substation construction for utility substation and transmission line equipment facilities.
  • Understand basic needs of protection and control and civil/structural disciplines as they apply to utility substation and transmission lines.
  • Create processes for substation physical design project scopes, estimates, budgets, and schedules.
  • Develop QA/QC checklists to improve physical designs for utility stations through 500kV, covering substation arrangements, sections, elevations, foundation and grading plans, lighting plans, fence plans, grounding plans, rigid bus designs, strain bus designs, below-grade designs (duct banks and cable trenches), bus and equipment support structures, and circuit arrangements.
  • Serve as Subject Matter Expert for installation requirements of high-voltage transformers, group-operated disconnect switches, breakers, PTs, CCVTs, line turners, surge arresters, and other substation equipment.
  • Perform grounding studies and designs, bus calculations, lightning protection calculations, and ground grid designs using specialized software.
  • Create and implement written specifications on engineering drawings.
  • Lead a team of engineers and designers in a lead engineer capacity, overseeing junior staff and mentoring designers/drafters.
  • Check designs for accuracy, appearance, and adherence to customer standards.
  • Collaborate with other design disciplines, colleagues, construction contractors, consultants, materials suppliers, and clients.
  • Visit sites to advise on physical engineering issues and modify designs to resolve construction challenges.
  • Manage project budgets and schedules using project management principles.

Requirements

  • 8+ years’ experience as a practicing engineer.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an EAC/ABET accredited Engineering Program OR an approved evaluation of non-ABET credentials by NCEES OR graduation from a Master’s or Doctoral Program in Engineering from an institution with EAC/ABET accredited Undergraduate Engineering Programs.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer.
