About the Role
Performs a variety of duties in assisting technical and scientific personnel on various production support, research, and development projects at the Pantex Plant in Amarillo, TX.
Responsibilities
- Sets up, calibrates, and operates various pieces of complex equipment and instrumentation.
- Performs a broad range of difficult chemical and physical analyses using complex instrumentation and equipment.
- Performs and records calculations (arithmetic and algebraic) in the course of data analysis.
- Collects, reduces, and records data using manual, calculator-assisted, and computer techniques.
- Performs associated duties within the work areas to ensure proper housekeeping incidental to care and protection of equipment, records, and procedures.
- Performs work with a high degree of accuracy in all phases of duties under general supervision.
- Assists professional staff in identifying problems and in establishing new and improved procedures and techniques.
- Applies good judgment and skill in the performance of critical data assignments.
- Precisely follows prescribed safety procedures in handling explosive, toxic, flammable, or otherwise hazardous materials.
- Demonstrates the ability to methodically perform specified tasks and assigned functions.
- Ensures operations are conducted according to applicable environmental, safety, health, and management requirements.
- Observes and reports unusual occurrences or events that may affect safety, quality, or understanding of experiments or operations.
- Assists professional staff with the training of other Engineering Technicians as assigned.
- Maintains knowledge of applicable Federal, State, DOE (Department of Energy), Corporate, and Plant rules, regulations, Labor Agreements, and Plant-wide operating policies and procedures.
- Attends and successfully completes training classes as determined by the Training and Development Technologies Department.
- Participates in worker involvement, including input to work planning and methods to identify hazards and controls.
- Understands a worker’s right to stop work when personal or others' safety is jeopardized.
- Attends all required safety meetings and training, and offers suggestions for improvements to the work environment.
Analytical Duties
- Sets up, calibrates, and operates various instruments including, but not limited to: Mass, Raman, IR (infrared), UV (ultraviolet), and Atomic Absorption Spectrometers; thermal analyses such as CRT (chemical reactivity test), DSC (differential scanning calorimetry), DTA (differential thermal analysis), and TGA (thermal gravimetric analysis); liquid and gas chromatographs; and related equipment used for performing varied analyses.
- Performs qualitative and quantitative analyses in both gravimetric and volumetric areas.
Requirements
- Must be able to perform all duties and functions outlined above.
- Must meet initial employment requirements.
- Must be able to read, write, and comprehend applicable written and/or oral instructions.
- Must be physically fit to perform job functions as determined by Medical Evaluation.
- All qualifications, work history, training, and education must be verified by direct contact with former employers and/or documented proof.
- Must have no documented quality or safety issues during the most recent 18-month period.
- Must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (High School diploma or alternative).
- Functional requirements include:
- Lifting or carrying up to 40 pounds.
- Ability to keyboard.
- Repetitive motion of the wrist/forearm.
- Walking and standing for up to 1 hour/day.
- Near vision (ability to read computer screens, manuscripts, etc.).
- Ability to distinguish basic colors (red, green, etc.).
- Ability to qualify to wear a respirator.
- No evidence of current drug or alcohol abuse.
- Ability to use small tools.
- Ability to perform safety-sensitive duties.
Environmental Factors
- Exposure to solvents and degreasing agents.
- Exposure to heavy metals (Mercury, lead, and beryllium).
- Radiation exposure (plutonium, tritium, uranium).
- Exposure to lasers (for Engineering Tech-reuse ONLY).
Qualifications
- Satisfactory completion of a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in a scientific discipline or an Associate of Arts (AA)/Associate of Science (AS) degree in chemistry or chemical technology.
- OR satisfactory completion of 18 semester hours of relevant college chemistry including General Chemistry I & II, Organic Chemistry I, Analytical Chemistry, and their associated laboratories, plus 6 semester hours of college math (Algebra and Trigonometry).
- OR satisfactory completion of 12 semester hours of relevant college chemistry (including associated laboratories) and 6 semester hours of college math (Algebra and Trigonometry), plus 3 years of experience in a laboratory performing hands-on chemical operations.
- OR any combination of the above college credit courses and equivalent experience totaling six (6) years.
- Must have no documented quality or safety issues during the most recent 18-month period.
Security & Certification
- Requires a Q clearance; the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.
- Requires Human Reliability Program (HRP) certification. If not currently certified, the process will be initiated upon assumption of the position.
- U.S. citizenship is required for security clearance applicants.
- All employees are subject to random drug testing without advance notification.
