Summary
This position assists the Engineering Manager and Field Operations in designing and estimating construction projects for the replacement and construction of natural gas facilities. Duties include handling calls and correspondence, preparing paperwork, completing engineering designs, attending meetings, and negotiating with external parties.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Handles calls and correspondence from Construction and Maintenance foremen, general foremen, civic inspectors, the sales department, and other Company departments regarding the status of jobs and projects.
- Handles calls and correspondence from outside the company (municipalities, engineering firms, developers) to process the needed information to coordinate the Company’s facilities with proposed improvements and development.
- Prepares necessary paperwork related to the Company’s procedures for gas main and service work as required, including utility agreements and other documents.
- Completes engineering designs and cost estimates using GIS for all types of main and service work.
- Completes engineering specifications and designs for new pipe installations, regulator stations, code compliance, improvements, and retirements of pipeline systems for natural gas and propane pipelines within the Company’s systems.
- Attends utility meetings and pre-construction meetings to negotiate with representatives from engineering firms and municipalities to reduce the impact of proposed improvements to the Company’s existing facilities.
- Attends site meetings, when necessary, to resolve specific issues or conflicts with the Company’s facilities and proposed improvements.
Essential Characteristics
- Ability to learn industry standards and regulatory code pertinent to pipelines and natural gas operations including CFR Part 192, 193, and 195.

Required Education (certifications, licenses)
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering from ABET accredited school required.
- Engineering in Training certificate preferred.
- Valid DL required.
Required knowledge, skill and abilities
- Minimum 0-2 years’ engineering experience in natural gas or similar industries.
- Knowledge of project management techniques and proven ability to lead across functional teams / work across functional areas to achieve mutual goals.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills and ability to deal effectively with both internal peers, staff of acquired entities and third-party service providers.
- Strong computer skills, including proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite and use of Spire’s systems such as Maximo, OBIEE, Oracle, Sharepoint, Asana.
Physical demands, environment and schedule
- Work is normally performed in a shared, open-office environment.
- Hybrid in- office/ remote work schedule.
- Work hours are typically 7:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday.
- An additional 20 hours may be required per month to complete necessary work in the areas of responsibility that fall under this position.
- Overnight travel is required to visit various work locations and to attend business functions.
- Up to 20% travel required.
