About the role
De Anza's Environmental Studies Department has been recognized by the State Chancellor's "Workforce Stars" initiative for strong performance in a key area: Environmental technology students increased their earnings by 120%. Businesses and other organizations are increasingly focused on operating their facilities in ways that are both financially and environmentally sustainable.
Responsibilities
- Grow demand for builders and managers who understand the technical aspects of Zero Net Energy (ZNE) building – including the use of sustainable materials and energy efficient lighting and HVAC systems.
- Understand passive solar design, LEED standards, code compliance, energy audits and total cost of ownership.
Requirements
The department offers two certificates and an associate degree in Energy Management and Building Science. The program focuses on the technical aspects of building operations, while the Facility and Sustainable Building Management program focuses more on the business aspects.
Qualifications
Courses are designed for students of all levels, including those just beginning their studies as well as professionals who are looking to improve their knowledge and career opportunities. Many classes are taught at De Anza's award-winning Kirsch Center for Environmental Studies. A number of courses are offered online.
Skills
The program is aligned with professional certifications offered by the International Facilities Management Association (IFMA), including Facilities Management Professional (FMP) and Sustainable Facilities Professional (SFP).
Benefits
Completion of the certificate or degree program provides students with a skilled knowledge of energy efficiency principles and prepares them for careers in managing and monitoring energy efficient buildings.

Environmental Science (Biological/Ecological Science Emphasis)
