About the Role
The Employee Health Nurse plays a vital role in ensuring comprehensive management of employee health across the organization. This position encompasses broad oversight of initiatives designed to protect workforce health, safety, and well-being. Responsibilities include overseeing new hire health screening and onboarding, coordinating access to resources, fostering a culture of safety, delivering educational materials, managing workers’ compensation claims, and supporting health and safety administration in accordance with The Joint Commission standards, federal, state, and local regulations, and organizational policies.
Responsibilities
- New Hire Health Screening Intakes & Onboarding
- Coordinate and conduct pre-employment physicals, including TB testing, blood work, titers, drug and alcohol screenings, and fit testing.
- Lead educational sessions on blood-borne pathogens, injury prevention, workers' compensation injury reports, hand washing techniques, and employee health services.
- Establish and maintain a dedicated health chart for each new hire, capturing all relevant health information from initial screening onward.
- Resource Provision for New Hires
- Provide new hires with information about available healthcare services, nutrition guidance, and fitness materials.
- Assist new employees in understanding and leveraging available resources to support their health, nutrition, and fitness.
- Safety Champion
- Perform routine inspections of medical equipment, including AEDs, to ensure proper function and readiness.
- Check and remove expired medications, ensuring compliance with safety standards.
- Submit monthly reports detailing equipment inspections and medication reviews.
- Education Initiatives
- Conduct regular CPR training sessions for clinical staff.
- Deliver monthly health awareness education on pertinent health concerns.
- Workers’ Compensation
- Collect, evaluate, and establish initial workers’ compensation injury paperwork.
- Drug Screening Monitoring
- Conduct random and post-accident drug screenings to ensure a drug-free workplace.
- Provide drug screening services for external employer partnerships (e.g., Effingham County).
- Return-to-Work Programs
- Assist with evaluating employees with work restrictions to ensure a safe return to duty.
- Monitor and follow up on employee callouts due to acute illnesses.
- Review return-to-work releases to confirm medical clearance for resuming job responsibilities.
- Medical Surveillance
- Conduct medical surveillance for employees exposed to workplace risks such as toxic chemicals and other hazards.
- Ensure adherence to safety standards and implement preventive protocols.
- Supply Ordering and Management
- Source and procure supplies required for departmental events and daily operations.
- Assess departmental needs, identify suitable items, and process supply orders while considering budget constraints.
- Other Duties
- Participate in committee meetings and assist with established goals and initiatives.
- Carry out additional responsibilities as assigned or delegated.
Requirements
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent, and graduation from an accredited Practical Nursing program.
- Licensure, Certification, Registration:
- Unencumbered Georgia Registered Professional Practical Nurse license.
- BLS CPR certification.
- Work Experience: Two years of experience in occupational health or employee health, gained in settings such as an employee health clinic, direct patient care environment, infectious disease clinic, or internal medicine clinic.
- Skills:
- Exceptional accuracy in record-keeping to meet legal and health compliance requirements.
- Strong interpersonal skills for counseling employees and clear written communication for documentation and reporting.
- Ability to assess workplace hazards, determine appropriate treatment or referrals, and provide supportive care and crisis intervention.
- Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
