The year 2025 began with a notable increase in unemployment in the first month according to recent official data. Almost 12,000 jobs were lost in the province of Alicante after the end of the Christmas season. This decline, combined with reduced consumer spending, led to a marked decrease in the number of insured workers at the social security system, standing at 735,000.

Impact on Sectors

• Commerce has been one of the most affected sectors, losing almost 3,000 insured workers.
• In the hospitality industry, the number of affiliates has decreased by more than 6,000.

These significant drops in the two main employment sectors have been directly influenced by the slowdown in consumption. Of the total jobs eliminated, 75% belong to these sectors.

Despite the challenges, there are positive aspects to consider. The industry and construction sectors have shown an encouraging trend, providing a brighter outlook amid these economic difficulties.

Regional Employment

In the Community of Valencia, there has been an increase in hiring that has allowed a significant reduction in unemployment among job seekers without prior experience. Nearly 500 new workers have been incorporated, especially in areas such as the Marina Baja, Alicante, and the Vega Baja.

Employment Trends in the Autonomous Community

In the Autonomous Community, the unemployment rate increased by 378 people in January, surpassing 318,000 employees. With the increase observed in January, it is now four consecutive months of increases in unemployment in the Community of Valencia, starting from late October. The three provinces have experienced an increase in unemployment, with Valencia being the most affected, accumulating two-thirds of the unemployed in January.
