Emotional Support Classroom Teacher Special Education Certification Required
Under direction of the Building Principal, the Licensed Teacher plans and provides appropriate learning experiences for students, creating an atmosphere conducive to intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development.
Responsibilities
- Provides a safe and encouraging learning environment to meet the needs, interests, and abilities of all students.
- Supports students with emotional and behavioral needs.
- Plans accommodations and develops instruction to support individual education plans.
- Collaborates with general education teachers, clinicians, and behavior interventionists to foster a positive learning environment.
- Maintains professionalism, confidentiality, and an atmosphere that promotes student learning.
- Establishes and maintains positive, collaborative rapport and communication with students, school personnel, and parents.
- Manages student control and discipline in the classroom, school premises, or during school activities by communicating behavior expectations.
- Implements a classroom structure to encourage student responsibility, cooperation, and mutual respect consistent with district policies.
- Plans and uses classroom time effectively.
- Implements School Board and school-based policies and procedures to uphold school regulations.
- Integrates technology in instruction.
- Communicates curriculum and student-related information effectively in oral and written form.
- Implements de-escalation strategies and manages classroom behavior using safety-care training strategies.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college.
- Hold or be eligible for State of Delaware teacher certification in the identified content area.
- Special Education Certification – Required.
- Demonstrated knowledge of subject content, curriculum, and methodology of effective teaching.
- Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs.
- Skilled in the use of multimedia and computer technology to enhance learning.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective collaborative relationships with students, peers, administrators, and parents.
- Demonstrated skill in oral and written communications, excellent human relations skills.
Qualifications for International Applicants

- Contact the Human Resources Department prior to securing a transcript evaluation vendor to ensure the correct vendor is used.
Physical Requirements
- Regularly talking, expressing, or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, including conveying detailed or important instructions accurately, loudly, or quickly.
- Normal cognitive abilities, including the ability to learn, recall, and apply practices and policies.
- Frequently sitting and/or remaining in a stationary position for long periods.
- Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects.
Physical and Environmental Conditions
The work of this class is generally performed in a school environment and may require the ability to move around the school and classroom.
Pre-employment Requirements
- Criminal background check and tuberculosis test.
- Provide proper identification (Social Security Card and Driver’s License).
- Documentation of eligibility for employment in the U.S.A.
- Completion of I-9 form and Delaware Child Protection Registry paperwork.
Training
Appoquinimink School District may require training in Safety-Care or a similar competency-based crisis prevention intervention program as a condition of continued employment.
