Emeritus RN - Maternal Child Health - Per Diem Days
About the Role
The Emeritus Registered Nurse (E-RN) is a recent or soon-to-be retired clinical nurse with an active RN license. This role supports tasks while role-modeling reliable, safe, and high-quality patient care. The E-RN leverages accumulated career knowledge to assist nursing team members in strategic priority areas such as safety, quality, patient satisfaction, nurse education, and team member engagement.
Responsibilities
- Provides support to nursing team members in strategic priority areas (safety, quality, patient satisfaction, and team member engagement) under the direction and supervision of Department Leaders.
- Requests and assesses assignments based on skill and ability in collaboration with unit Leaders.
- Accepts various delegated assignments, including but not limited to:
- Safety: Rounds for patient safety, responds to alarms, and monitors patients during off-unit transports.
- Quality: Rounds for problem-prone quality areas, completes audits/gathers data, participates in unit process improvement projects, and assists with regulatory readiness.
- Patient Satisfaction: Proactively rounds for patient needs, responds to patient call bells, supports admission/transfer/discharge processes, assists with intravenous preparation/disconnection/removal, dispenses PRN medication (as directed or prescribed), assists with ambulation, obtains and records patient vitals, and follows up with discharged patients via telephone.
- Team Member Engagement: Provides unit-level in-services, serves as a unit expert (e.g., Dimensions Nurse Champion), covers patient assignments for team member meal breaks, serves as a primary or secondary preceptor for new nurses, mentors nurse residents and other nurses on the unit, and participates in/leads unit shared governance activities.
- Creates and nurtures a safe, non-punitive learning environment for novice, advanced beginner, and staff nurses through mentoring and developmental activities.
- Champions HMH safety, quality, and high-reliability initiatives, providing evidence of their efficacy in practice.
- Integrates new knowledge, develops new skills, and enhances critical thinking capacity for novice nurses as they advance in clinical practice.
- Collaborates with the clinical educator to provide learning experiences for novice nurses, such as learning modules, journal clubs, and group learning.
- Works closely and collaboratively with various nursing and non-nursing departments to meet organizational goals.
- Performs other duties and/or projects as assigned.
- Adheres to HMH organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
Requirements
- 25 years of recent clinical nursing experience.
- Proficiency in teaching, mentoring, and coaching new graduates and novice nurses.
- Completion of preceptor training and experience serving as a preceptor within the last 2 years.
- Demonstrated expertise in integrating evidence-based research to improve professional practice and patient care.
Qualifications
- Required:
- NJ State Professional Registered Nurse License.
- AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification.
- National Certification in area of specialty.
- Preferred:
- BSN strongly preferred.
Pay
Minimum starting rate of $46.25 per hour. The posted rate is a reasonable good-faith estimate of the base pay for this role at the time of posting and may vary based on factors such as labor market data, experience, education, certifications, skills, geographic location, internal equity, budget, and grant funding. Full-time and part-time (20+ hours/week) positions may be eligible for shift differentials, performance-based incentives, bonuses, or commissions.
