Emergency Ward Clerk/Emergency Medical Technician (Per Diem)

About the role

The ED Ward Clerk/EMT works under the guidance and supervision of staff nurses, the ward clerk supervisor, and nurse managers. This dual role requires flexibility and professionalism, focusing on the assigned shift duties while being able to transition based on department needs.

As a Ward Clerk, the primary responsibility is assisting the department in preparing records for patient care and treatment, including registrations, insurance verifications, telephone communication, transfer documentation, and admit coordination.

As an Emergency Medical Technician, the role involves performing assigned duties under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, assisting emergency department physicians and nurses in patient treatment, and maintaining effective interaction with the public and hospital personnel.

Responsibilities

Ward Clerk Duties

• Greets all patients in a courteous and timely manner.
• Takes patients directly back to beds upon arrival in the ED.
• Obtains accurate, complete, and correctly spelled records with information received from the patient and/or patient’s representative.
• Enters and updates all essential information into the computer for patient registration.
• Verifies patient demographic and insurance information is current and correct upon admission, ensuring required forms are completed and signed.
• Accurately scans patient’s driver’s license and insurance information into the system.
• Obtains travel insurance information and has patients complete special forms.
• Collects copays and payments.

EMT Duties

• Performs CPR in compliance with AHA.
• Provides patient care within the scope of practice, including but not limited to:
  • Orthopedic appliance application
  • Wound cleansing
  • Vital signs
  • 12 lead EKGs
  • Bedside patient care
  • Point of care testing
• Actively participates in the safe delivery of patient care and maintains a safe environment for all patients.
• Maintains patient confidentiality.

Qualifications

• High school diploma required.
• Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
• State of California or National Emergency Medical Technician certification required.
• American Heart Association or American Red Cross BLS certification required.

Pay

Starting wage $24.66 to $29.89 based on qualifications above minimum requirements.
