About the Role
The Emergency Department Technician (EDT) performs duties to enhance patient experience while maintaining patient comfort and a safe environment. The role involves additional training beyond that of a traditional Patient Care Assistant (PCA), enabling the EDT to perform critical care functions in an emergency setting under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, following Ohio Board of Nursing guidelines.
Responsibilities
Clinical
- Performs aspects of clinical care as assigned and instructed by the RN, including vital signs, pulse oximetry, capnography, intake/output measurement, and carbohydrate counting.
- Collects and ensures appropriate processing of specimens.
- Performs skills such as phlebotomy, IV insertion, foley placement, wound care, EKGs, and various diagnostic tests (iStat, Biosite, Clinitek, Hemoccult).
- Assists with procedures under clinician guidance, including orthoglass/plaster splinting, cast removal, finger sticks for blood glucose, and tube/catheter care.
- Provides post-mortem care, crutch/walker education, and assists with ambulation, range of motion, and incentive spirometry.
- Performs Medtronic and Boston Scientific device interrogation.
- Assists in psychiatric care, maintains CPI training, performs suicide checks, and responds to Code Blue and Code Violet emergencies.
- Maintains certifications and training for Ebola/emerging pathogens and BLS.
- Transports patients between departments and assists with deliveries in Labor & Delivery.
- Performs orthostatic vital signs and ring removal using a ring cutter.
- Understands and performs tasks specific to different ED areas (Triage, Express, Pods).
- Documents care according to policy and provides clerical support as needed.
Comfort
- Assists patients with clothing changes, hygiene needs (elimination, perineal care, skin care), and positioning/repositioning for comfort.
- Helps patients with nutritional needs, including menu selection, feeding assistance, and providing snacks/fluids as instructed.
Environment and Safety
- Ensures patient and unit safety by maintaining beds, side rails, and call lights in appropriate positions.
- Follows safe patient handling guidelines and applies safety devices as needed.
- Performs purposeful rounding every 2 hours (or every 15 minutes when applicable).
- Maintains organization of patient rooms, identifies fall hazards, and removes unused equipment.
- Adheres to infection control policies and promptly corrects/reports safety hazards.
- Demonstrates knowledge of fire safety equipment and emergency reporting protocols.
- Prepares rooms for the next patient by cleaning surfaces, removing trash, and ensuring equipment functionality.
- Provides continuous observation of assigned patients using AvaSys software when applicable.

- Demonstrates leadership by motivating, educating, and mentoring peers while providing patient and family care.
- Responds to scheduling responsibilities promptly and participates in 75% of staff meetings.
- Engages in unit-based performance improvement activities and council/task force initiatives.
- Supports professional growth and development for self and peers.
- Complies with organizational and departmental policies, including required training and competency maintenance.
- Trains new employees in departmental skills and ExCELS core values.
Communication
- Orients patients and families to the hospital environment, services, and policies (e.g., call signals, visitor policies, dining options).
- Facilitates communication among team members regarding patient care needs.
- Ensures appropriate patient care signage is posted and communicates effectively during end-of-life care.
- Helps patients and families understand reasonable expectations of emergency care.
Age-Specific Competency
- Demonstrates ongoing competency in providing age-specific and culturally appropriate patient care.
Qualifications
Education
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
Experience
- 3+ years of experience as a PCA, MA, EMT, or equivalent role in a hospital acute care or first responder setting, or a nursing student who has completed one medical-surgical rotation or another acute care experience.
Required Skills and Knowledge

Certifications
- AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers (required before patient contact).
- Violence Prevention (AVADE) certification.
