About the role

As a member of the UVA Community Health team, individuals contribute to patient care decisions, support advanced medical technologies, and experience the satisfaction of making a difference in people’s lives every day.

Responsibilities

  • Provides patient services and care within the Emergency Department.
  • Cleans, maintains, and stocks supplies and equipment.
  • Applies principles of standard precautions and infection control.
  • Collects patient status data and reports information to licensed clinical staff.
  • Performs clerical, safety attendant, and other duties as assigned within scope.
  • Receives delegated work from a Registered Nurse or member of the medical staff as part of the care team.
  • Assists/provides patient care throughout the entire patient experience under the direct supervision of the physician and/or the registered nurse.
  • Assists in room turnaround, including appropriate cleaning of equipment, supplies, and environment.
  • Organizes supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Assists with patient care while complying with Department, Hospital, and Regulatory policies and procedures.
  • Understands concepts of sterile and non-sterile techniques.
  • Adheres to safety measures.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • 2 years of ED Technician experience preferred.
  • Phlebotomy, ECG Tech, EMT, or NA required.

Required Skills and Requirements

  • Basic patient assessment skills including primary survey.
  • Basic knowledge of primary interventions.
  • Demonstrated effective communication skills.
  • High level of compassion, desire to help others, and self-confidence.
  • Basic computer knowledge with demonstrated administrative skills.

Preferred Skills and Requirements

  • ECG course/certification.
  • Medical terminology.
  • EMT-B/I/P.

Competencies

  • Provides and documents assistance to patients under the direction and supervision of a licensed nurse.

Physical Demands

The job requires constant standing, frequently walking, and bending/stooping. Proficient communicative, auditory, and visual skills. Attention to detail and ability to write legibly. Ability to lift/push/pull 100 lbs. For any weight over 35 lbs., use Safe Handling Equipment.

Other Requirements

  • May require the use of safety equipment, such as HEPA mask, for infection prevention.
  • On call responsibilities as directed.
  • Ability to travel between campus buildings, remote facilities, and out of town as needed.

Pay

The base compensation range for this role is $17.75 - $27.28 hourly. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education. The pay range does not include any applicable incentive compensation programs such as shift differentials, clinical ladders, and other incentives that may be available for those in eligible positions.
