About the role

As a member of the UVA Community Health team, the Emergency Department (ED) technician contributes to patient care decisions, supports advanced medical technologies, and helps make a difference in people’s lives every day.

Responsibilities

  • Provide patient services and care within the emergency department.
  • Clean, maintain, and stock supplies and equipment.
  • Apply principles of standard precautions and infection control.
  • Collect patient status data and report information to licensed clinical staff.
  • Perform age-appropriate patient assessments and interventions as delegated by a registered nurse or medical staff member.
  • Assist with room turnaround, including cleaning equipment, supplies, and the environment.
  • Organize supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Assist with patient care while complying with department, hospital, and regulatory policies and procedures.
  • Understand concepts of sterile and non-sterile techniques and adhere to safety measures.
  • Perform clerical, safety attendant, and other duties as assigned within scope.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • 2 years of ED Technician experience preferred.
  • Phlebotomy, ECG Tech, or EMT preferred.
  • EMT-B certification or nursing student in final year (verified by official transcript).

Skills

  • Basic patient assessment skills including primary survey.
  • Basic knowledge of primary interventions.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • High level of compassion, desire to help others, and self-confidence.
  • Basic computer knowledge with demonstrated administrative skills.
  • Preferred: ECG course/certification, medical terminology, EMT-B/I/P.

Physical demands

The job requires constant standing, frequent walking, and bending/stooping. Proficient communicative, auditory, and visual skills are required. Attention to detail and legible writing are necessary. Ability to lift/push/pull up to 100 lbs; use Safe Handling Equipment for weights over 35 lbs.

Other requirements

  • May require use of safety equipment such as HEPA mask for infection prevention.
  • On-call responsibilities as directed.
  • Ability to travel between campus buildings, remote facilities, and out of town as needed.

Pay

The base compensation range for this role is $16.75 – $23.39 hourly. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate’s qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education. The pay range does not include applicable incentive compensation programs such as shift differentials, clinical ladders, and other incentives available for eligible positions.
