About the Role

The Emergency Room Tech provides technical support for physicians and nurses in the Emergency Center, assisting and supporting the nursing and medical staff to perform patient care, environmental tasks, and manage supplies and equipment for a patient-focused, cost-effective operation.

Responsibilities

  • Assist RNs and physicians in providing technical care by documenting vital signs, performing phlebotomy and IV starts, EKGs, transporting patients, placing patients on cardiac and vital sign monitors, and performing Point of Care Testing.
  • Perform wound care, obtain lab specimens, and document all care/procedures provided.
  • Conduct urine drug screens and/or breathalyzer tests after training.
  • Assist physicians with physical exams, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures.
  • Apply orthopedic splints and fit patients for crutches.
  • Maintain cleanliness of patient care areas, storage rooms, and equipment (including patient rooms, restrooms, waiting room, and nurse’s station).
  • Unload supplies into the Emergency Center.
  • Perform POC (Point of Care) and QC (Quality Control) lab testing.
  • Conduct daily checks of ABC equipment in each room and maintain temperature logs in Pharmacy and Lab.
  • Change out Sharp’s containers and report equipment malfunctions for repair.
  • Perform patient care as directed by nursing or medical staff and document on the medical record.
  • Stock and maintain adequate supplies of equipment (e.g., linens, wall mounts, thermometer probes, otoscope probes, patient care room drawers, vital sign machines, IV carts, ortho carts, urine cups, triage wound supplies, nourishment counter, and refrigerators).
  • Perform quality control procedures, calibrations, and maintain records in compliance with manufacturer’s requirements and policies.
  • Ensure proficiency testing specimens are performed in compliance with policy.
  • Monitor appropriate send-out lab procedures and maintain current policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of new testing methods, products, and instrumentation; stay informed on current technologies.
  • Interact professionally with department members, physicians, staff, administration, and the Lab Manager/Director.
  • Perform moderate and waived testing per Clinical Laboratory policies and interpret results appropriately.
  • Document correct information for compliance purposes.
  • Perform daily opening and closing duties as assigned.
  • Greet and check in patients professionally upon arrival.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 1-3 years’ experience in an Emergency Room setting or 1-3 years’ experience as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-P or equivalent).

Skills

  • Ability to read, comprehend, and write simple instructions and correspondence.
  • Ability to present information effectively in one-on-one and small group settings.
  • Basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, rates, ratios, percentages, and interpreting bar graphs).
  • Ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to handle problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Basic computer skills.

Qualifications

  • Current Emergency Medical Technician (or equivalent) certification preferred.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.
