About the Role
The ER Tech is responsible for all basic patient care duties, including therapeutic treatment as ordered by the physician, operation of laboratory equipment, patient discharge, and education.
Responsibilities
- Triage all patients upon arrival to determine their location of treatment (Emergency Room versus Urgent Care).
- Provide general patient care, including therapeutic and diagnostic intervention.
- Provide age- and education-specific education to all patients.
- Maintain a clean work environment, including duties such as emptying trash, mopping floors, and cleaning counters.
- Follow all company and HIPAA policies and procedures.
- Foster a friendly, respectful, and customer-focused work environment.
- Accurately interpret a physician’s instructions and assist with patient treatment.
- Communicate patient needs, feedback, and observations to the physician and operations coordinator.
- Administer medications and collect specimens for laboratory tests.
- Review and uphold lab policies and procedures.
- Collaborate with health team members to ensure patient well-being.
- Execute physician orders, including administration of medications, treatments, and IVs according to policy.
- Observe and document patient responses to medications.
- Prepare specimens and operate lab equipment.
- Maintain 100% attendance at mandatory skills training yearly.
- Maintain all required professional certifications and licenses.
- Participate in facility certifications.
- Maintain continuing education units (CEUs) and complete yearly assigned education on time.
- Attend a minimum of four staff meetings and review minutes of meetings not attended.
- Provide patient education and discharge instructions.
- Follow infection control and OSHA safety guidelines.
Physical Demands
- Regularly required to talk and hear.
- Requires close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- Involves intermittent physical activity, including standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, and crouching, as well as lifting and supporting patients.
- Exposure to inside environmental conditions, such as radiation, noise, infectious/communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, chemicals, fumes, odors, gases, and dust.
- May work near moving mechanical parts and be exposed to toxic or caustic materials.
- Moderate noise levels from phones, computers, printers, and medical equipment.
- Requires standing, walking, sitting, use of hands, reaching, and may involve climbing, kneeling, or crouching.
- Scheduled based on operational need, including rotating shifts, standby, and on-call.
Requirements
- LVN, EMT-P certification, or diploma.
- Current BLS & ACLS certification (or within 60 days of hire).
- Current PALS/ENPC certification (or within 60 days of hire).
- High school diploma or GED.
- Time management and ability to use medical terminology.
- Performance of diagnostic procedures and quality focus.
- Technical understanding and dependability.
- Ability to analyze information and communicate effectively with patients.
- Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, procedure manuals, and HIPAA regulations.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.
- Basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
- Ability to apply common sense to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
- Ability to handle problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Completion of company-provided laboratory testing education and competency.
