EMERGENCY ROOM TECH

About the Role

Functions as a specialized direct patient caregiver in the Emergency Department, performing tasks to assist nurses and providers. Performs hands-on care, specified technical tasks, and coordinates communications on the unit. Enters and updates the ED tracking board promptly to communicate with staff.

Responsibilities

• Document and maintain patient records as appropriate.
• Take and record temperature, pulse, respiration rates, blood pressures, oxygen saturation, weights, heights, and intake-output measurements.
• Complete all items/activities on the “TECH CHECKLIST of DAILY ACTIVITIES” as applicable.
• Order patient care supplies and keep supplies stocked in proper amounts in rooms, carts, and other areas.
• Clean and wrap instruments for transport to sterile processing; correctly identify and replace surgical instruments on appropriate trays.
• Assist in maintaining a safe environment, including checking equipment for proper function, handling linen, and storing supplies.
• Gather equipment for oxygen setup, check connections, and ensure proper placement; set up suction equipment and verify function.
• Promptly answer patient call lights and respond to patient requests.
• Report observed changes in patient condition to nurse or provider.
• Assist with transportation of patients to other areas of the facility.
• Prepare wounds for provider as directed; clean and dress wounds appropriately.
• Apply splints, immobilizers, and ace bandages; fit patients for crutches.
• Perform tasks such as range of motion (ROM) and assist with ambulatory devices as specified by the patient’s plan of care.
• Assist provider with pelvic exams and triage, including taking vital signs.
• Ambulate and assist patients in and out of bed, into wheelchairs, and during transport (including on oxygen if required).
• Empty canisters, urine bags, bedpans, and emesis basins; record intake and output.
• Provide general care such as positioning, lifting, or turning patients; assist with bedpans, urinals, or commodes; provide preoperative supportive care.
• Apply anti-embolism stockings and sequential compression devices.
• Collect urine, stool, and sputum specimens as ordered.
• Perform phlebotomy, including correct labeling using two patient identifiers, maintenance of lab-draw supplies, and restocking.
• Perform INT removal per nursing or licensed independent practitioner (LIP) direction.
• Perform suture/staple removal at nurse or LIP direction.
• Perform EKGs.
• Follow all established infection control policies, including standard precautions, transmission-based isolation precautions, OSHA standards, safety measures, and proper body mechanics.
• Demonstrate knowledge and competency in providing for age-specific needs of the population served.
• Maintain a clean and orderly patient and work environment.
• Follow policies, procedures, and safety standards; complete required education assignments annually.
• Work toward achieving goals and objectives and participate in quality improvement initiatives as requested.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Minimum Education: None specified; must be sufficient to meet standards for achievement of the required license and/or certification.
• Minimum Experience: One (1) year of experience as an EMT, HUC, LPN, MA, or PCA/CNA OR must meet licensure requirement below.
• Licensure Requirement: CPR required. If less than one (1) year of experience, must have current EMT registry or license, LPN, MA, or CNA certification at time of hire/promotion or be a student in an accredited nursing education program. Students must have successfully completed the fundamental clinical skills portion of the program (1st semester of clinicals).
