Duke University Hospital is a premier tertiary referral center and Level I Trauma Center serving patients across North Carolina and the surrounding region. Our state-of-the-art Emergency Department includes:

  • Five adult emergency care areas supporting diverse and complex patient populations.
  • Advanced, in-department CT scanners, X-ray suites, and point-of-care ultrasound equipment for rapid diagnostics.
  • A 24-bed Clinical Evaluation Unit (CEU) focused on efficient ED observation and patient flow.
  • A dedicated 13-bed Pediatric Emergency Department.
  • A 7,000-square-foot ambulance bay supporting high-volume EMS arrivals.

Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with attending physician(s), provide direct clinical services for critically ill patients according to established protocols and evidence-based practice standards.
  • Perform triage, physical exams, collect and document data, conduct diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, order and schedule laboratory studies, diagnostic procedures, and professional consultations.
  • Prescribe appropriate interventions and medications, coordinate patient care, and provide direct patient care services.
  • Formulate and implement treatment plans for acute illness management and observation care in collaboration with attending physician(s).
  • Analyze clinical practice patterns to improve medical care, effectiveness, and efficiency.
  • Communicate verbally and in writing all pertinent patient information to supervising physician, nursing staff, patient resource manager, home health agencies, and other healthcare providers.
  • Provide timely documentation in the electronic medical record, including diagnostic test results, laboratory findings, patient condition, response to therapies, and communications with physician colleagues.
  • Contribute to excellence in patient care, teaching, consulting, and provide leadership within the organization and the advanced practice profession.
  • Participate in protocol development, throughput optimization, research, and quality initiatives that shape the future of emergency care delivery.

Requirements

  • At least one year of advanced practice Emergency Medicine experience or completion of a residency/fellowship in Emergency Medicine.

Qualifications

Education

  • Physician Assistants: Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program.
  • A Bachelor's degree is required; Master's degree strongly preferred.

Certification

  • BLS/ACLS certification required.
  • ATLS certification required to participate in trauma care (may obtain after start date).

License

  • Must be licensed as a Physician Assistant in the State of North Carolina.
  • Active certification as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • DEA licensure required.

Schedule

Enjoy a dynamic schedule with a blend of 8-hour and 12-hour day, evening, and night shifts. Mixed shift roles offer variety in clinical experience with a predictable monthly commitment of 140 hours.
