Overview

Performs direct patient care including assessment, evaluation, and basic life support according to the goals of Mercy Health System, the philosophy of the Sisters of Mercy, Standard of Care, and Employee Code of Conduct. EMT-I's may also perform clerical, dispatch, and maintenance duties as required.

Position Details

  • Educational Requirements: None.
  • Licensure: EMT license for the state where employed, valid drivers license.
  • Experience: Applicants must be at least 19 years of age to operate Mercy EMS vehicles.
  • Certifications/Registrations: Hazmat Awareness, BLS for Healthcare Providers, NIMS 100, 200, 700 and 800 within 90 days of hire.
  • Other: May be required to work differing shifts and schedules.

Working Conditions, Mental and Physical Requirements

  • Unimpaired mobility: Must be able to respond quickly to ambulance, must be able to access patients n difficult terrain, must be able to climb stairs, must be able to work in close and dangerous environments such as damaged vehicles, must be able with partner to carry equipment and patients.
  • Strenuous physical requirements such as CPR, lifting and moving of equipment and patients in a variety of environmental conditions.
  • Perform required medical skills and techniques.
  • Correctable vision acceptable for day and night operation of emergency vehicles, must have color acuity adequate for determining of skin and blood color, and must be able to read medication dosages on drug labels and syringes.
  • Hear and understand information provided by patients, family or bystanders; must be able to hear breathing sounds and accurately determine auscultated blood pressure; must be able to differentiate separate conversations in active, distracting environments; must be able to hear and understand radio traffic when responding with lights and siren.
  • Speak and enunciate clearly and at a level audible to others in loud conditions, must be able to speak clearly in stressful situations, must be able to verbally communicate with patients, families and other emergency services personnel.
